Greg- Yes. The Vantage Highway is old Highway 10. Quite a disatnce. I really doubt the could see the trestle. Probably could see a very distant train, or light higher on the hill. Boxcab E50
You can see parts of the ROW as it climbs Boylston hill above the trestle from parts of the Vantage Highway. State of WA just reauthorized the potential use of the John Wayne Trail for rail, if the need should come up. Might make that Renslow trestle rumble again with modern trains. Makes it the prototype following the model. Its all Greg's fault! Quick Greg, run some steamers over it. Maybe that will come true too!
Or the Boxcabs! I've been on the Vantage Highway and believe me, it ain't no highway! Very narrow and it seemed like I was in a canyon most of the way down to Vantage. It actually comes out a little north of Vantage on the Columbia.
Am glad the reauthorization came through. Not certain what drove the move. But at least there's a chance that again in our lifetimes...... Boxcab E50
I too heard and read those documents extending the deadline time for the WDOT to find a user. I was under the impression the only way i was going to see trains run through the Saddle's was on my own doing...however, now maybe we'll see BNSF running it. Either way this means I need to get back out there again and shot some more photos for my layout needs. Heaven forbid, BNSF get out there before me and change some of the landscape. that brings me to another point, how bout that Boylston tunnel? is it tall enough to allow clearance for twinstacks? The last time I was there I remember seeing a 45 imprinted into the top. 45 feet high??? if so, is this tall enough for container freight? If it is not tall enough, do you think they'll dig the floor lower or just uncover the tunnel? hmmmmm.... Greg
Greg- That indicates the tunnel number. In this instance, it's #45. "Johnson Creek Tunnel." I don't know about daylighting it. It's nearly 2000 feet long. Possible. But would be expensive. It had enough clearance, to allow tri-level autoracks underneath trolley. I'm thinking it would clear modern well cars with double stacked containers. Boxcab E50
ahh, i forgot about the autoracks that traveled the route. then i agree...haha. I keep getting the name of the tunnel mixed up with the old station area...I should have known better!
They actually did have them!! They were silver and they rode on cars that almost looked like spine cars that were silver too!
My memory must be failing. Or did these come after 1980? Thus I'd not have paid attention. Photo in a book? Boxcab E50
the atlas pine trailers that were made, are those modeled after a real thing as well? I never knew they had containers...I want to see a pic as well! also ken, do you know if the milw ever had sd7's here in washington?
I think they came along in the early 60's? One of my MILW books has a picture of them in it. They were used on passenger run's like mail trains and such. I'll have to look it up.
Greg- SD7's out west? You betcha they did. In fact, when new, almost all SD7, and SD9 units saw their first service out on Lines West. A bunch in Washington. Bellingham Line, Everett Line. Other places. Boxcab E50
ken, do you know if the SD7's were still hanging around in the 70's? If so, I might want to find some of these for myself, I have always loved that loco along with the SD40-2s!
Greg- From 1974, to January of 1976, a large portion of the SD7, and SD9 fleet went through the SD10 program. Which the results existed through to the end. Anyhow, yes- There were still some SD7 around until the end. Also, there were several SD9 still out and about. One of which remained into 1981, on the SNCT. Boxcab E50
ok so hopefully by the end of this weekend the rock formations (cuts into the hills) on the west and east of renslow will be done. I was also thinking maybe I should build the irrigation channel that goes under the bridge... Then I need to head out to the store to get some ground/earth paint. but i need to make sure to leave time for 2 papers i need to type for class...man you can really get caught up in this hobby!!!
