quote:
Originally posted by Alan: Those 4600's must be getting a bit old now, although have been rebuilt. Are they still ok to handle?

Hi Alan . Yeah they are getting old . Basically they are used in yard service only for switching purposes . The company put composition brakes shoes on them last winter and they would not stop at all Overall for what they are used for they do the job fine
Hey Dave, That is quite a collection of antiques you are showing These units remind me of the "GP16" rebuild program that SCL (a predecessor of CSX) did to extend the lives of their old GP7/9's. Most of them disappeared by the mid-90's, however like CF7's, they can be still be found on various short lines. Harold
It's funny that you mention rebuilt locomotives because these GT 4600's are rebuilt . Actuallly you see them ALOT around here in the yards . We have alot of switching yards here . Port Huron , Flint , Pontiac , Detroit , Flat Rock , Lansing , and Battle Creek . All of these cities are like within 2 to 3 hours within eachother and each one has yard where switching is done , yard jobs ect...

Those units have a single large 48"? fan. Does anyone know if they always have it (late phase production) or were they changed on rebuilding from the smaller dual fans?
Alan , some of those units have different fans , smaller ones . I am not really sure on the size of them , never checked myself
Units were rebuilt from GP9's Depending on the order of the units, earlier ones were built with th epair of 36's and later were the 48's. I would have to check my order numbers to verify which units were built with which style fans. Too much for me to do at this point, but just a piece that would help. Jon
