    Genesee & Wyoming Inc. Reports Traffic for February 2009



    GREENWICH, Conn., March 9, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) (NYSE: GWR) today reported traffic volumes for February 2009.

    GWI's traffic in February 2009 was 71,071 carloads, an increase of 9,631 carloads, or 15.7 percent, compared with February 2008. GWI's traffic in the first quarter of 2009 through February was 143,086 carloads, an increase of 17,482 carloads, or 13.9 percent, compared with the first quarter of 2008 through February.

    GWI railroads acquired within the last 12 months shipped a combined 13,555 carloads in February 2009. GWI's same-railroad traffic in February 2009 decreased by 3,924 carloads, or 6.4 percent, compared with February 2008. The decrease was principally due to declines in pulp & paper traffic of 2,231 carloads, metals traffic of 2,212 carloads and minerals & stone traffic of 1,179 carloads. These decreases were partially offset by a 1,476 carload increase in farm & food products traffic primarily due to increased grain shipments in GWI's Australia Region and a 1,432 carload increase in coal, coke & ores traffic primarily due to increased coal shipments in GWI's Illinois Region. All other same-railroad traffic decreased by a net 1,210 carloads.

    GWI railroads acquired within the last 12 months shipped a combined 27,442 carloads in the first quarter of 2009 through February. Same-railroad traffic in the first quarter of 2009 through February decreased by 9,960 carloads, or 7.9 percent, compared with the first quarter of 2008 through February. The decrease was principally due to declines of 4,582 carloads of pulp & paper traffic and 4,232 carloads of metals traffic. These decreases were partially offset by a 3,377 carload increase in farm & food products traffic and a 2,110 carload increase in coal, coke & ores traffic. All other same-railroad traffic decreased by a net 6,633 carloads.

    GWI railroads acquired within the last 12 months include: CAGY Industries, Inc., which GWI purchased on May 31, 2008, and the Georgia Southwestern Railroad and the Ohio Central Railroad System, both of which GWI purchased on October 1, 2008.

    Historically, GWI has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income.

    GWI owns and operates short line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands and owns a minority interest in a railroad in Bolivia. Operations currently include 63 railroads organized in nine regions, with more than 6,800 miles of owned and leased track and approximately 3,000 additional miles under track access arrangements. GWI provides rail service at 16 ports in North America and Europe and performs contract coal loading and railcar switching for industrial customers.
