I've recently seen the ads for the MT Z-scale Geep. I was noticing how nice and thin the handrails were for a Z-scale unit. Then I read that they're actually etched.

Now here's my question.. why doesn't someone make etched handrail sets for N-scale? Just think how easy they would be to install for those of us who hate having soldering flux smoke in their eyes ;)

I'm not talking about the kind GMM currently makes, which are quite excellent by the way. I'm talking about an entire side as a single piece, to replace the whole delrin handrail section.

And talk about scale! Think how thin they could be [IMG] I guess the only problem is that they would actually be square, not round...

Anyhoo, just thinking outloud again. :D

Interesting question. I have avoided doing handrails in N. Perhaps these would be a solution? In this scale, flat would be hard to notice. Couldn't be much worse than oversized Delrin?

With my fumbling fingers, fine etchings would likely become nicely kinked. How fragile would these be?

I know somebody makes a set. I have some for JnJ SD45T-2 shell. But I don't remember if it is GMM or BLMA or who that makes them. Whoever it is makes quite a few different ones.... HTH

Are you talking about the whole complete unit, or just the stanchions? I couldn't find handrail sets on either GMM or BLMA.

I'm talking about a complete etch of the rail and stanchions together.. that's what you have?

Bernard Kempinski makes sets for the Kato SD 40 and JnJ SD 45-T2 as photoetched drop on parts as shown:

Is this what you're referring to?

I agree, I'd like to see more like this. Great for those of us who really aren't up for soldering wire to a bunch of stanchions!

close.. but it looks like you still have to solder in the handrails, right?

If I remember what I've read about them, the front and rear may need some solder, but the sides slip into place and (as best as I remember) get glued in place. But I've got no first hand experience, so I can't really say.

The heck with the rest of that, I'll settle for 4 sills and handrails for my GP40Ps from IM. The square overider/ sill and the steps and square rear handrails is what I need!

Sliced & diced to make the rear walk and sill for one, but having it done for my 4 units would be a blessing (or whatever).
