What railfan opportunities are there in Hawaii? I've got one of those honeymoon things coming up and will need something to do .
Congratulations! I have one of those "things" coming up myself, but not on Hawaii... I'll be lucky to see the UP near Tucson... What island? I'm not that sure but I don't think there's too much. I know I saw existing tracks north of Honolulu on Oahu, on the way to North Beach, and there is a museum or display somewhere I believe that dealt with the pineapple trade and the tiny steamers. Didn't see it, though. Have fun whatever you do!
A few days on Oahu. No time here, I'm a big WWII Pacific theater naval buff. Then a couple days on Hawaii. No time here either, I'll be climbing volcanoes. Then a week or so on Maui. If it was her way, no Navy , no volcanoes . What will I do, what will I do. I just realized , no time for railfanning. Please forgive me.
Maui features the Lahaina, Kanapali and Pacific NG road with a turntable at one end, two steamers. It runs north-south on the island and anyone can tell you how to find it.
If you go to the island of Kauai, you can still see a few spots where the narrow gauge cane haul RR ran, there is one major bridge near Wailua,I think, that is used as the beach easement from hwy 56. There is even talk of building a light rail line on Kauai to ease the heavy traffic on the north shore of the island. It is REALLY HEAVY! The light rail would use much of the remaining ROW of the cane-haul RR and also serve the airport. Its mostly just a pipe dream right now! CT
