    Hi Guys,

I am completing my HO scale basement layout and would like to share the hobby with you guys. I notice a lot of N scale stuff on here, and I am considering gradually working toward a N scale layout with long trains and lots of mountainous scenery.

Most of my trains are used ebay stuff because I have been working within a budget. I put together most of my buildings and have a few scratch built ones, too. I also spend time repairing locomotives and sometimes wonder how to make my old rolling stock run better.

I have DC only and am not a member of any clubs or groups.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Yes. We have a lot of N scalers here. But there are plenty of HO and other folks as well. Somehow, they just don't chat as much as N people, who are a very social bunch.

    Welcome aboard!

If you have particular questions about working with the stock, I'd wager you'll get some feedback asking in the HO forum. And in return, perhaps you could share some of your techniques for repairing locos?

Thanks for the warm welcome!! I noticed that my Athearn S-12 is kind of giving out on me after running fine, I will be taking it apart this week this week to see what is up.

Hi lasm, welcome aboard. It's possible that the gear train has crudded up with old grease, dust, pet (and human) hair, and other nasty stuff. There's a 98% probability that a complete disassembly and good cleaning with 93% alcohol, followed with small dabs of light grease, will work wonders. Also clean the wheel treads of any "stuff" that has accumulated over the years. In other words, give your baby some TLC before declaring it a basket case or roundhouse queen.
One challenging opportunity after another is why we love this hobby...;)

Welcome aboard lasm. Judging by your "handle," are you in the logging business?

Thanks, guys. I took the S-12 apart last night and simply wasn't making contact under the shell. I took the trucks off and lubed and inspected. After some more tinkering, I noticed that the gear was cracked in the wheelset so will be ordering some new or cannabilizing another one.

I had a logging and sawmill business for the better part of 15 years. Now in government service.

I will start a workbench thread soon!!

    Thanks for the greetings!!!! lasm

Bill, thanks for the welcome, and having been born in 1937, you must have ridden on a few of those steam locos in your day---

Welcome aboard, I was up in your neck of the woods a few months back, Two Harbors. Beautiful country and the SOO Line RR. Really enjoyed the RR museum in Minneapolis.

    Welcome aboard, LASM!
There's plenty of talented modelers here, both in N and HO scale. Glad to have you!

Thanks, guys, for the welcome. Here is a look at my layout so far and you can see I like the single track going through countryside, also simple spurs:

The thing moves a little faster than I wanted but the old Athearn doesn't crawl like some of the more expensive models.

    Thanks for viewing!!

Check out this Model railroad Music video short, shows my Northern Pacific GP-18 with some local freight including pulpwood load, prototypical 40's to 80's in my vicinity. Runs through my Industrial area:

    Thanks for looking!!

Nice videos. Looking good! But you might post them in the appropriate scale forum so more members can enjoy them. Not as many members visit this one. :)
