I would like to build a model of an NW-5. This type of engine was owned by the Southern and Great Northern. I would like to build it in HO Scale, and ideas on how to start. Thanks

Whoa....you picked one heck of a prototype to model! For those wondering what exactly an NW-5 looks like, here's a pic of a GN NW-5 from George Elwood's Site (photo by Dave Goss): [IMG] As for modeling, it looks like the long hood could possibly be made from a Kato NW-2 hood; I don't have one to look at, so I don't know offhand if all the door/louver configurations are 100% correct. The cab looks like it could be reused, although the back of it would need to be modified (using a Cannon switcher cab might be a bit easier, IMHO). IIRC, it rode on a GP7/9 frame, although for the fuel and air tanks it looks like you'd be on your own, since they don't really look like anything EMD used on any other units (at least nothing I've seen). The short hood looks like it would have to be scratchbuilt too, since it doesn't seem to match anything else out there. Those are my thoughts on going about modeling one of these; any other ideas/comments? [IMG]

The only diesel switcher I have, looks like this one in that mine does have the tapered long hood at the cab end. It is still new, hasn't been run, but it had a rubber band stretched over the motor shaft, and to one axel of a truck. The rubber band has died of old age, this is a revel. I kept it because it is my favorite colors, Magenta and silver. It is still packed away. If I find it, I'll post a photo.

Way back in June 1975 Railroad Model Craftsman published a kitbash article by Donald Cook. My collection does not go any where near that far back but someone here might? Check the RMC web site for back issues. I know Model Railroader will photocopy out of print articles, but I am not sure about RMC. http://www.rrmodelcraftsman.com/

Model Railroader Cyclopedia Volume 2: Diesel Locomotives had drawings.

There are a handful of other items about NW5 engines at The Model Train Magazine Index - search results

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!
