I'm thinking the standing train might be connected to the men in foreground. Who? Why? Probably lost to history? Unless someone such as Allen might know. Boxcab E50
Re: Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links It is my opinion that the men in the photo are railroad officials and that the train is a Business Car Special. Perhaps the railroad was proposing some changes within the Watershed boundaries and a tour of inspection was necessary, or it could just be a stopover during an ordinary tour of inspection. Notice the 8-wheeler locomotive pulling the business car, I have only been able to document three American class locomotives ever being used on the Coast Division, one was in commuter train service on the Everett Branch between Everett and Monroe, WA. Thanks to all that have contributed to this topic all things history of the Milwaukee in the the Northwest Interests me. oh and I registered just so that I could respond.
I took the liberty of taking those maps that were linked here and overlaid them on Google earth. If any one would like me to up load them in this form please respond. I got the ones in the rattle snake lake area but have not gotten the other two quite yet. those are going to need a little more hunting to find where they go. natfoot
For those unfamiliar with Cedar Falls, and vicinity, it might be interesting to see those overlays uploaded. For those of us with some knowledge, it still could be valuable. Boxcab E50
Here are the first three. I Overlay ed them well there was no elevation data present so it may look off in that mode. also the maps do not exactly match up, but I did my best. 168.jpg.kmz 170.jpg.kmz 179.jpg.kmz
I was able to download one. And go into the file folder. But all that shows, is the original blueprint. These are some sort of Google Earth zipped file. help? Boxcab E50
h These are .KMZ files to be opened in Google Earth if you do not have Google Earth they will not open. To Open-> Run Google Earth and select open and go to where the file is. Open the file it will load it in the temporary places in the left navigation panel below "my places." The files are the blue prints on top of Google Earth. To make them translucent go to the file in the left navigation bar and select the file and "Edit." At the bottom of the box that pops up there is the slider that makes it translucent. if there is any thing else that I have missed or your still having problems with these files please let me know.
Thank you for your interest Natfoot. The good folks hear have contributed a lot of interesting information which made viewing the archives so much more enjoyable for me. Now on to Google, for a look at the overlayed maps you genorously provided, appreciate the effort. Kevin
Nat, finally had the right computer with GE, interesting overlays. Very cool, thanks for doing that, M
Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links Thought I would re-open this thread to post a picture of the Electric Sign that Seattle City Light had placed near the Cedar Falls depot. I have photo evidence that this sign's wording was slightly changed over time, also that it was either once in a different location or there were two of these signs several hundred feet apart. Allen.
Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links I inadvertently sent my message before I could attach this link from the Seattle Municipal Archives, which shows the Electric Sign placed well east of the depot, almost behind the water tank. Allen.
Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links Sorry, I meant to include a link to the photo, as I am hoping it will be a little bigger and easier to see the sign. Allen. http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~archives/photos/61/400/6154.gif
Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links I'm about ready to give up, but try this one. Allen. http://content.lib.washington.edu/c...ps&CISOPTR=96&DMDIM=500&DMDIMW=600&DMDIMH=600
Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links Okay, sorry about stringing this thing along so many posts, but here is the final pieces of the puzzle. First photo is Cedar Falls depot in 1912 with the electric sign plainly visible behind it. The second picture is of the depot a number of years later, with the sign slightly revised, by adding the words "Plant No. 1" above the sign and replacing the word "Plant" on the original sign with the word "System" on the newer sign. I assume this change would have been made perhaps after the building of the Ross Dam, which I don't have the date for. Allen.
Interesting stuff. I wonder about the sign placement. Was it intended to be seen primarily by train passengers? Or was there enough non-rail traffic, such that they were trying to site it for all visitors to see? Boxcab E50
Historic Cedar Falls, WA photo links Well, after looking at every photo I could find, and carefully studying the maps, I am now convinced there was only one electric sign at Cedar Falls. If you go back to the first posting in this thread and click on the third link, there is a photo showing the whole Cedar Falls Yard from the hillside above. The electric sign is visible, just to the left of the trestlework on the City Light railroad line to the Dam. (This photo is a lot clearer if you just look it up at the Seattle Municipal Archives site) As hard as it is for me to believe, the sign in the photos of the Cedar Falls depot, that appears to be directly behind the depot, is actually quite a ways up the hill behind it. Some depot photos show a bit of trestle showing to the left of the building. This trestle is the east end of the trestle across the draw as seen in the birds eye photo, roughly behind the Milwaukee water tank. Here is another view of the sign, the track just below it is the City Light Muni line up to the dam. The motor car is setting on the City Light Spur, from the Milwaukee main line to the City Light residential area and it appears from the planking that they are sitting on the crossing of the county road on this spur, just east of the depot. http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~archives/photos/15/1200/155.gif Anyway, sorry to have wasted space trying to figure something out that I had the answer to all along, but now that I know what is what, I wanted to set the record straight.. Allen.
