Anyone have information / images of these two (2) engines that were built in Europe and shipped to the US for use by the D&H C. C. ------------------ Strourbridge Lion strourbridgelion@yahoo.com Delaware and Hudson Virtual Museum
Following on from my previous short note, Stourbridge Lion (note spelling) was built 1828 by Foster Rastrick & Co of Stourbridge (UK) in 1828. An almost identical loco, "Agenoria" was built in 1829 for the Shutt End Colliery Railway at Kingswinford. It worked until about 1864 and is now at the National Railway Museum at York (UK) Wheels 4' 0¾" Weight 11 tons inc tender Cylinders 8½ x 36" All I can find about Horatio, is that Horatio Allen was the residen engineer of the D&H I have an old book with a photo of "Agenoria" outside a museum, but probably a guide book for York Museum would have a much better photo. Probably local history books in the library would have more info on "Lion". Is there anything specific you want to know. I seem to remember reading a book about the loco many years ago. Cheers, Paul. Thanks for the update (including the spelling). The "Horatio" was to have been the first; but, was lost to time and never arrived. I don't know much else about this engine other than that. I'm told the part of the original "Lion" is somewhere on display within the US. Now I need to send myself in for repairs since the BLHS History page spells "Strourbridge Lion" with an "Extra R" which is where I took my username from and the correct spelling is as you listed it and I didn't notice the mistake. Shame on me!!!!!!! ------------------ Strourbridge Lion strourbridgelion@yahoo.com Delaware and Hudson Virtual Museum
