I am building an HO 24" deep shelf layout on a drywall wall. I'm gonna use 2" thick foam. What's the best way to attach the foam to the wall? Will the foam sag between whatever supports it? Does the foam rest right on the supports or should there be something between? How should I attach cork roadbed to the foam? How should I attach flextrack to the cork? Thanks.

This is how I added a shelf to my basement layout. The foam will NOT sag, no need to put any wood under it , just support it every 16 inches or so.

Of course shelf brackets will work also...Mike

Are your brackets glued on? What kind of adhesive did you use?
Did you use cork roadbed? If so, how did you attach it to the foam.
How did you attach your track to the cork.

Okay. Let me try and answer these for you:

What's the best way to attach the foam to the wall?
I personally would make a box type construction with 1X2 lumber and then fabricate a bracket with 2X2s and 1X2s that would secure directly to the wall and the outer edge of the layout. This would enable you to easily move the layout if you ever moved or even if you wanted to take the layout to a show.

Will the foam sag between whatever supports it?
NO! My dad has a neighbor that has an HO scale layout that is built with 2" foam as the basis. Some of his modules are 8ft long and there is no sag. However, he laid the styrofoam on top of the 1X2 box construction which I refered to earlier.

Does the foam rest right on the supports or should there be something between?
    Once again 1X2 construction.

How should I attach cork roadbed to the foam?
Use Elmers glue. This can be the white or the yellow carpenters type. It is easy to use, cleans up with water and if there is any excess it can be scraped away with either some sand paper or a knife.

How should I attach flextrack to the cork?
Since you are using styrofoam, you can use sewing pins. dont do what my Dad used to though and raid my moms good sewing pins. She always god pi$$ed at him for that one. LOL

    Hope this helps

I used hot glue to glue the brackets to the wall. Use caution though, if the glue is too hot it melts the foam and it probably wont work as good. Construction adheasive would probably work here but I haven't tried it. Metal L brackets might be a better route if you are mounting to drywall. I use Unitrack, so I don't have any cork, but again liquid nails or hot glue is what I use to mount the Unitrack. And really there is no need for any type of wood bracing IMO......Mike
