Harold, a long time ago we were discussing photo software and Charlie suggested Irfanview. Do you have it? I think it's still free and should be at a site of the same name. It does a great job of resizing your print quality image to one suitable for the web without compromising the quality. I use it all the time and am very happy with it. :D

I know I don't have it on my current PC, but I think I did have it on a prior one. I know I used Pixresizer too... I may have to try one of those.

Of course, I could always whip out the manual for Digital Image Pro and it'll probably point out what I am doing wrong [IMG]

Internet Explorer seems to only allows saving as BMP when very large JPEG files are viewed. Not sure of the inner workings, but I think it has something to do with the auto-resize feature that fits large photos in your available browser window.

Image Expert lets you to change the size of an image from Humongous down to 8x10, 4x5, etc. It also lets you change the image file size and type with the "Save As" command.

I think I received Image Expert bundled with Windows XP, although it might have been bundled with another application I bought. However I got it, I do know I didn't pay for it by itself.

I have tried four different Windows XP machines and all show as JPG files.

I am still playing around with various software that can resize images quickly and effectively. I currently have several thousand digital images, plus at least a thousand photos to scan.

My last camera took images that were in the 2-3 woo woo woo range; the Rebel XT averages 3.5-5 woo woo woo!

I've seen some that the default is BMP but I could change it to other types including JPG. It might be a Browser setting that is taking you into a program that doesn't handle anything but BMP but you can adjust that.

It just in the world of "Windows" to often strange things happen that often end up being a Configuration Setting and/or something in the Cache/Temp Files that need changed/purged that can make all the difference. I know in my 20 Years of IT work you just can't explain everything that happens and it's worse since the Internet came to pass as now you are dealing with so many different and conflicting technologies that more often then not something will break when you least need it to happen. Worse yet before you figure out the why it goes away and you just know it will come back to bite you again. Just becuse something works for one person doesn't mean it will work for everyone becuase it is so rare to find two PC's that are exactly alike and those little difference can make all the difference in the world and leave you...

    and then some.

I just recieved my XT this week and am very happy with it so far. I still have to learn how to use all the features on it. I took a few shots to check the depth of field and am very pleased. The shot below needs better lighting and is re-sized to a 640 X427 pixel photo but it gives you an idea of th e D-O-F.

I have just recieved a EF-s 10-22mm lens for my XT and I think this is going to be the lens that I use for most of my model photography.
    The initial results are great!

    What lens did you buy?

I'm awfully tempted to buy another one. But I guess I really ought to see how I can do with the kit lens first. It took some nice non-train photos this weekend.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens allows for some very dramatic shots and I think they look more life-like.

You can see how many bays are visible in the roundhouse. Using the Aperature Priority at a F22 allows for a great depth of field. This shot was not with the best of lighting.

The next one I used a fill light for the back of the room and one light closer to the front and the F22, auto focus setting as in the first picture.

I don't usually like to show bench work in my photos but this was just a quick shot to test the lens.

The last shot was taken with the same settings and fairly close to the train.

All the cars are in focus and you can read the lettering on the water tank in the back. All these shots are reduced down quite a bit bt really look great fll size.

I've got a Canon 55-200mm lens on the way... I like the lightweight feature and low cost...

I love the 18-55 kit lens. It is great, fairly fast, ultralightweight, and wide angle. Great for roster shots and general photography. However, I do take a LOT of train pictures, (from public property) that require a longer focal length. Although the 55 really equates to ~ 90mm in 35mm (film) world, I'd enjoy something a little longer. My old Canon 28-105 is nice (~160mm length), but heavy and old. Besides, with a 55-200mm length on a digital SLR, that gives me an effective range of 90-320mm (in 35mm terms). Gee, I might have to dig out that old tripod!

Even though I have a show this weekend, I doubt I'll have time to try model photography of my N scale models.

The picture looks great. I wish we could go back in time and shoot some pics with your camera. [IMG] You got yourself a really good tool there, the rebel is an awesome camera. You may want to consider getting photoshop or even the cheaper photo shop elements that often comes bundled with scanners. there is alot of stuff you can do in photoshop to improve the image quality of a digial pic. for instance converting the file to another file type is a cinch in Photoshop. but there are other features such as the curves adjustment that you can use to make subtle alterations in brightness of the image.

Cool camera Harold. I've been wanting to jump into the DSLR world, but the Pentax *istD is still too expensive for me. So I'll keep using my LX. [IMG]

Speaking of wide-angles, here's some farmland about halfway up the layout, shot with a 12mm on a Nikon D100. A pair of PAs is hustling a 50-car hotshot past Harrington Farms, starting the last two mile climb to the third deck. The nose of the PA is about three inches from the lens.
