I am Currently on the Market for a Good digital cameral, I am going to field camp in about a month and a good camera is highly reccommended - it beats sketching any day!

Anyways, i need something htat is capable of both close up as well as far away/close up zoom capabilities - basically, somthing that would be able to take a picture of a model scene (that is the level of detail in a rock outcrop) up to the level of detail that is on a train about 50-100 yards away (well, rock outcrops are such).

I have a little bit saved up for this, so the budget is pretty gogd.

What digital camera would you guys reccommend at this time? I would probably be interested in something that can accomodate different zoom lenses, but I certianly do want the instant result screen on the camera as well.

    Christmas in April!!!

Benny, I am very pleased with the Canon Rebel XT. Being a DSLR, it gives more control over your shots than most "point-n-shoots". It is fairly expensive, but the camera is so versatile that you shouldn't be wanting to buy a new one in a few months because a bunch of new "gee-whiz" features are being offered.

I also bought the EF-S 17-85 mm lens instead of the EF-S 18-55 mm offered with the "Kit". The 17-85 mm gives a wider zoom range without sacrificing quality, and the loss of only one f-stop. The slight price difference was worth the extra 30 mm range.

I have the sony dsc-717 and am satisfied with it. A good resource for research is www.dpreview.com that site will answer any question you have regarding digital cameras, types, photo editing (post processing) printers etc etc.

If you are not going to go with the DSLR, and want something that is small and easier to carry, check out the Olympus C-765 or the SP-500-UZ - I have both. They both are 10x optical zoom, but the SP-500 has 6 megapixels and you should be able to get it at Circuit City or a similar store for 350.00 or less. I love the SP-500 because it uses AA nickle-metal hydride batteries, which I have several sets of.

My wife and I have recently went 100% digital and her new camera takes wonderful photos. All the below images have been edited ONLY to reduce the size for internet posting. No tripod was used, these are freehand photos with natural lighting.

I am exceptionally pleased with the Nikon D70. The D50 has the same guts but a few less features. People I know love the Canon Rebel XT just as much.

At the next level down, my daughter has a Sony D2S with a 12-1 zoom and image stablization. She's very pleased. There are not interchangeable lens here, but it is 12-1.

I have used Canon's for years, film & Digital and loved them.
I bought a Sony Digital a coupl eyears back and I woudl never buy another Sony camera.
I woudl suggest a Canon. almost like you can't take a bad photo with a Canon no mater what your skill levels.
I probably should sell them, whenever I'm at photography classes, People love my photos, they want to know what I do. I tell them, Canon camera. many go and buy one and now they are taking wonderful photos as well. they say it truely is the Canon Camera that is the trick.

I have just purchased a Nikon D-50, and it has yet to photograph a train, but I am really impressed with it so far, having taken some seascapes and church publicity shots. Nikon glass is super. :D

I've got the Canon Rebel - excellent camera. Like Hytec I also opted for the EFS17-85 which is smashing lens, superb image quality.

My wife didn't want the extra hassle of an SLR and has opted for a sony DSC-R1. She wanted a good quality zoom and this semi compact has it in abundance - super image quality too

Errr.... the new Panasonic AG HVX200 HD video camera. :D But that is the video maker in me saying that. Gawd that Camera is sweet. High Definition video for under six grand.

I would argue that either the Nikon or the Canon are equivalent cameras. My wife is a photog. Here's here site:
    http://www.lexiphoto.com/

Most of what you see was shot with either a Canon rebel or a Medium format film camera. You probably can't tell which shot is which format. There is also some Holga work hidden in there.

You are going to get as many recommendations as there are cameras on the market.

I am quite pleased with the Nikon D70s
