Warning: This is a long detailed personal account.

I have been eyeing On30 models for a few weeks. They just started appealing to me after I got a gander at the Bachmann shay. Actually this fascination started about the time this shay came on the market and just lingered in the background all this time.

Of course doing proto research and discovering a neat prototype just an hour or two from my house didn't help either. Gilpin tram. http://www.gilpintram.com/maps.html

I spent a couple visits to the LHS looking at all the On30 products they had on display during this time as well. It doesn't help that my friend Colorado50 is into this stuff either, he's a bad influence here. I have seen his On30 trains, they have even graced the trackwork of my HO time saver.

Today, I am at the LHS and they have a On30 kit for a Gilpin caboose. You see where this is heading i'm sure... I oggle the kit online and finally today while on lunch from work I head over and discover that this is the only kit they have in stock by this manufacturer. the one kit I wanted is the one kit they have, somehow I feel I am destined to have this kit so I get some caboose color by flquil and the cabbose kit and head for the door. But no, it only gets better, they are having a customer appreciation sale and my caboose, though listing at 39.95$ and selling at the LHS for 35.00$, is now 29.75$ My fate is sealed. I am now a On30 modeller.

I need this about as much as a hole in the head right now. You would think the N scale trains and the HO scale trains and the O scale three rail...well, ok I'm a chronic train addict ok?

Now for the crux of my whole dilema. I have become a railroad sneaker. One of those guys who buys stuff without telling his wife about it. I paid for all of this with my own personal credit card and haven't uttered a peep about it to my wife. It is still sitting in my office at work. Somehow I am going to get this into the house without her noticing. Then I will spend numerous evening building this kit. She won't notice a thing. Yeah right.

    oh oh!

Wait a minute - is this an insult or a compliment? :D

I'm sure when she does figure it out - and she will - there will be some new fancy camera equipment at your house. Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.

If you can figure out how to do this, and publish the new method for success, you'll be rich! So, all potential future troubles will be gone....

fluid- Yes, I admit it, I think I have a trainoholicism problem.

    Eagle,
Bribery is a sin. I cannot condone it. lol Bribery... Bribery is not an option. Bribery means that she gets to get something that costs about four times as much as my train car. This would deplete the already meager train fund. I need another option.

Eric- It's not so much an insult as just a honest assessment of the issue at hand. you are a trainoholic too thus a bad influence. As to your other comment, DO you realize how expensive camera gear is? It's liek saying I get the plastic caboose kit and she gets the Brass loki.

Boxcab- Maybe I can just call in sick to work and then go to a local Wendys and build my kit. I could bring comfortable clothes and change in the mens room. I could even spread out into two booths with my stuff. Sort of move in for a day or two ya know? This seems like the most viable option at this point.

Oh wait, I have one last option. "look what eric gave me for my Birthday!" I may have to use this secret trump card to get away with my caper.

    Geeky-

If you must resort to this tactic, I'd go all the way. Secretly rent a large storage locker. And build your dream On30 layout there. [IMG]

Bring it home a piece at a time hidden in your briefcase. Since it's O scale, and you already have some of that stuff, unless she's really scale/gauge savy she may never pick up on the fact that you've gone off the wagon. Until the On30 stuff starts multiplying, that is.

    Regards

Tell her the truth. You will be better off in the long run. Otherwise, today, trains, tomorrow lap dances and then motels.

OR, tell her it is a manly N scale shay that you rubbed along the tank and it grew.

I had to come clean. Her response was "It was only 30.00$?" She was worried I had bought the shay. he he he I forgot about the old bait and switch tactic.
