Some friends have recently seen (and photographed) an EMD G-12 which has just been rebuilt (in Mexico) and is on it's way to South America. I guess that really makes it a GR-12, at least that's what they tell me. Anyway, the question is whether we can find out what railroad the locomotive was originally built for. The rebuild plaque shows built in 1964 and a Chassis # 2357-2. Is that chassis number like a serial number, and would anyone have an idea of how I could track the number to determine the original railroad? The guys are suspecting that it originally was an NdeM locomotive (especially since a lot of NdeM G-12's had dynamic brakes, as does this one) but aren't sure. By the way, I don't (yet) know where in SA the locomotive is going. It's repainted blue, but with no identifying logo or name. The labels on the controls are (still?) in spanish. [Edit #1] Appears that it's going to Peru. Thanks Ed
http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/g12.htm Serial numbers, no frame numbers. Units built in 1964 included orders for Brazil, Mexico, Israel, New Zealand and Indonesia.
That's what I would have expected. Thanks for posting the listing of units, I had no idea that existed out there. I'll ask the guys to recheck and see if they can't scare up a serial number.
