HI modellers! I am getting to start building our rather large model of the line From Appleyard to Omak in 1957, and would DEARLY like anecdotes, memories, and information on WHERE to find specifics on operations of the line back then. Back in 2000, I met Mr. Buck while I was at "An Affair with Trains" in Phoenix, Arizona. When he found out about my love of that section of the Great Northern Railroad, he GAVE me a stack of about twenty sheets of drawings of the ENTIRE Appleyard complex, every turnout, light, signal, and building, and for that, I will be forever grateful. An employee timetable or two might help give an idea. Our family would spend time in the area each summer. We had friends in Wenatchee. But I was just a boy in the Fifties, and really cannot recall many details of what I saw. Seems like it was mostly agricultural and forest products. I recall a flat roof styled depot at Entiat? And a fruit warehouse or two in that segment of the line. Rocky Reach Dam was under construction at that time. Power was GP7 or possibly ALCo RS2/3 engines. Boxcab E50
THANKS, Boxcab E50!! I have satellite photos from google earth of the entire line, and surrounding countryside, and now knowing that the dam was under construction, will help the time accuracy a whole lot. Also knowing that the roof of the depot at Entiat was flat helps as well. I used to live in Springdale Washington, (It's a very small town in Stevens County, north of Spokane). I want to set up a lumber operation somewhere between Entiat and Omak, the problem is that I don't think anyone has ever built Heissler's or Shay's in N scale. Brie
Time to hit up every GN book you can find! I know there's a ton of pics in the older books from Charles R. Wood. The GNRHS is another awesome tool as well! Rocky Lives.....
Brie, There is a CD in the works with information about every location on the line. It is being put out by the Skykomish Historical Society, with Bob Kelly, a Great Northern Railroad Historical Society bigwig, behind putting it together. He is in charge of the museum. They put out a very nice CD about the Mansfield branch a few years ago, and another about all the stations over Stevens Pass. I'm not sure if the GNRHS put together a reference sheet on the W-O, but you could look it up at their site.
