Interesting news. Especially the teen-age suicides on the train tracks in Flagstaff. Not to mention yesterdays BNSF train collision near Flagstaff. These days, I'd definitly stay away from the tracks in Flagstaff.

I sometimes wish the railroads would stop their frantic buyouts of each other and focus on what's important: Employees, Infrastructure, and Pblic Relations.

It greatly saddens me that this happened, especially since not everyone walked away. Yes, the company can replace the engines, and even the crews, but we cannot replace the people.

    God Bless.

In some ways, I am not surprised that an accident happened in Flag. The last time I was there, there was a specific section of track the boobed up and down about a railwidth every time a wheel ran over it, right before an intersection.

And from what I hear, this is common in the Southwest. Scary!!!

Another problem out here is these people who are in such a darn hurry that they no longer have respect for anybody's authority or right of way. Police cars, ambulences, fire engines...in some areas, not only do people not pull over or even slow down, but even follow in the wakes of these vehicles. And I see the same thing happening at crossings, people speeding up for the train because they don't want to stop and wait. When will people learn?!!!!

TV has definatly over glorified chicken.

    Train hits van, killing one

DAVY, W.Va. -- A train hit a van that was returning senior citizens from a trip to the grocery store, killing one woman and injuring three others, police said.

A wire service reports that the van became trapped between railroad crossing arms on the outskirts of Davy, a town of about 400 in southwestern West Virginia, said State Police Sgt. J.R. Pauley.

"I don't know if (the driver) was trying to beat it, got stuck or what," said State Police Sgt. D. A. Berkel. "He had gotten out of the vehicle and tried to raise the (crossing) bar. When he got back in, the train struck it."

The Norfolk Southern Railway train was traveling about 35 mph with about 100 empty coal cars, railway spokeswoman Susan Bland said. She said the crew couldn't stop the train in time.

The engine hit the van on the right rear side and spun it around, fatally injuring Edna Justice, 83, of Davy. The driver, George Masterson, 55, of Squire, was treated for minor injuries.

Elsie Mitchem, 82, of Welch, was in critical condition Wednesday. Hospital officials would not release the condition of the third person injured, Nellie Beverly, 70, of Davy.

The van belonged to the McDowell County Commission on Aging. A spokeswoman for the commission said the group had no immediate comment.

I never thought that news from here would make it to Michigan!!
 I read that the vehicle somehow stalled and the driver got back in the vehicle, but just(immediately)then the NS train hit it. :(
