Here are the first two HO kits that I built.

    All they needed was couplers
    ( kadee #5) and weights.

I added Intermountain metal wheels too.

    Thanks,

The Frisco hopper looks great. I like those airhoses. They are Intermountain kits?

I might pick up a couple. Who carries them online?

Could you have used the Kadee #58 couplers on those cars. The Kadee #5's have been around a long time and the #58's are a newer version of the #5.

Can you make your layout longer than 12 feet.

The Kadee #58 is a better coupler. I was using Kadee #5's way back in the 1960's.

    Cool, I'll check them out.

    I had a couple #5's that I couldn't use.

    Thanks,

Thanks for the info about the IM HO kits. I might buy some if I can find some ATSF cars plus some reefers.

the reliability on the No58s is not as great as the reliatbility on the No5s. the no5 is physically bigger, hence why it probably separates less.

I am changing over to #58 so eventually all stock will have them. They look so much better than #5's. So far I have had no problems whatsoever with the 58's.

I know many folks who use the Kadee #58 with no problems whatsoever.

They look much better than the # 5's and operate flawleesly.

I just purchased some Kadee #58's for some of my brass steamers.

Six couplers put together and installed in less than ten minutes. I forgot how easy it was since I've been in N scale for so long.

I even bought two cars, an Athearn reefer, and a Kadee PS-2 hopper.

I also have a brass Bay Window caboose.

You gave me the bug. I'm going to make a 1x12' or 1x16' shelf layout similar to Layout # 8 in Wescott's 101 Trackplans for Model Railroaders.

I almost have my engine fleet:

    Brass United Two Truck Shay
    Brass 4-4-2 American
    Bachmann 2-8-0
    Bachmann 2-10-0

I will probably pick up a Bachmann Three truck Shay or a Heisler and A BLI 4-6-4 Hudson.

I plan on putting decoders and sound in all the loco's.

The shelf layout should be fun. I bought some Atlas code 83 flex track just to keep these on for the time being.

I don't know which track to use as the shelf layout uses #4 turnouts exclusively.

No, I'm not going to part with my N scale layout. It's very high maintenance per square inch.

Here are some photo's of the loco's I have :

Not in my experience using them at my club - I haven't had any problems with equipment equipped with 58s. Same goes for my clubmates that have converted over to them. The difference in knuckle height between the 5 and 58 is fairly minor, and not enough to contribute to uncouplings, IMHO. If there's enough vertical play to cause uncouplings between 58s, then either the layout is in serious need of trackwork, or the cars/engines need to pay a visit to a KD height gauge. No point in blaming the coupler when the problem is likely trackwork, or poor coupler installation.

    Bob,

Those are some awesome locos!

    and caboose. [IMG]

The Bachmann Three truck Shay looks
very cool too. I saw one at the store.

I got some #58's and they are smaller.

Before you get track, you should try a
    atlas 83 #5 and a peco 83 #5 turnout.

Can I put a dsx and a regular
decoder in a HO spectrum 2-8-0?

    What's in my atlas gold?
    tsunami? sound and drive?

    Thanks,
    Loco1999

You can fit a DSX sound decoder and a Lenz mini gold series decoder in the 2-8-0.

However the 2-8-0 is outfitted with a plug, for plugnplay decoder. Don't know the size of that decoder.

I'm only going to need #4 turnouts for this plan, as it's a point to point shelf layout.

What;'s the difference between the Atlas # 5 and the Peco #5.

I've been out of HO for so long now. I haven't kept up with all the new stuff at all.

I really like the 4-4-2 and United two truck Shay.

    Thanks for the info.
I am not sure what I will do.

I really don't know much either.
    I think #4's are only code 100.

    Thanks,

    Loco1999:

I would use the plugn'play decoder on the HO Bachmann 2-8-0. Some do come with sound from what I'm told.

If not you probably have room for a Soundtraxx DSX sound only decoder.
