well I'm starting to compile what I want in my layout

    5 must haves:

    1. a sorting yard
    2. two cassettes/exchange/hidden industries one on the left ("West") and one on the right ("East") or maybe on to the extension.
    3. on layout industries as well - a few, nothing to much.
    4. a curve going off at one end at 90° so then I could expand with a removable table shelf that would extend into the main room.
    5. I want switching but not heavy industrial switching because I want to model fall in the northeast with lots of colored JTT trees.

the main operation will be swapping empty/fulls on the two exchanges/cassettes and then sorting them for local businesses (on layout) and then back to exchanges again.

Well, let's see. You want to model fall colors in the NorthEast US. Which era do you like? Transition? Messy-railroads (Penn Central, Conrail, etc.) days? Recent? You could do some really nice New York Central action, or Pennsy, or get all modern with CSX. Even go a bit crazier with a made-up railroad of your own (that way you can create your own history, or blend it with the real thing, even create an alternate timeline for a fallen flag!).

Your location preference gives us a starting point, but the more you can tell us about your interests, the better suggestions we can make (though we're all a bit biased here... heh). :)
