So after a long hiatus I'm gonna start MR-ing again. Back when I was active in the 2000's and 2010's there was a product for modeling roads that had the look and feel of asphalt. I set up forms and gooped the stuff into them. I think it was called some variant of asphalt. It came in a fairly nice sized tub too. Been looking again and the only thing I've found is this stuff called Modelers Asphalt. It's available but in really small quantities like 1.7 fl oz / 50 ml for 8 bucks plus shipping. From the EU. Can't be cost effective. Am I nuts or does someone else remember this stuff? It looked like the real thing once it dried out. I bent it to cause cracks and stuff too. I still have a modeled sample around here somewheres. I'll have to see if I can dig it up.
I remember that stuff too but haven't seen it in years. However, the other day, I did find this stuff for concrete. It is a paste like substance. They had asphalt and some other stuff as well. Thought I will give it a try soon and see how it goes. Not exactly a big tub and wasn't exactly cheap either.
I’ll await your report, sir! Not like I’m in any real hurry, I just wondered if the stuff is still around.
Woodland scenic also has a product for doing roads that's sort of plaster based......you lay it down like you describe , and then paint it for whatever surface you are going for (concrete/asphault). Most likely, the company involved simply went out of business (like so many other model RR businesses) but it's also possibly the material in question had toxic properties and got axxed for that reason. I'll also await BNSFs report.
Google Arizona Rock and Mineral. On their web site go to the category of Powders and scroll down. You will come across their cinder asphalt powder that is mixed with while glue ( Elmers ) and water then trowel on.
I used both their concrete and asphalt (below, photos from a temporary shelf layout I had in Japan-more on my WC Waukesha Sub thread). Layout doesn’t exist so had to pull old photos from my thread. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I applied a rough coat of this stuff last night. It would work better if I had made a form for it and had the right tools on had to smooth it. It has a nice texture, went on easy and the color seems good Since I'm redoing a good bit of this area later, I wasn't super concerned about being neat. This was a very quick and somewhat sloppy application and it is still wet in this shot. Will see later how it looks dry but so far so good. After I use it a little more and learn it's characteristics, I can see me using more from this supplier of this type of materials. Oh, and it cleans up from putty knives and hands with soap and warm water,
Watching with interest... I've seen some of the incredible work miniatures painters do, and I've explored some of the products they use. I bought a jar of AK paint a couple of days ago, but haven't tried it yet. I was surprised to find it at a local hobby shop. Unfortunately, their color selection was mostly military. Where did you buy the concrete texture?
I got that jar at a LHS in Cartersville GA. They have a huge selection of different paints and stuff. The selection is geared toward use for model RR and plastic model kits so that works out great. Last night, I was over in the Norcross GA area and walked into a place called Level Up games. Another place with a great selection of paints and stuff but it's all geared toward the war gamers and suck but they did have this same thing in a different brand. There prices were a little higher than the Cartersville store so all I did was browse.
Here's a look after it dried. Again, this was a very quick and not neat application. I see the potential.
This is off topic, but are those Atlas Ford LNTs bashed with tanks from CMW septic trucks? I would like to know and see more so I can steal this idea, haha. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Check out post #976 in my layout thread. That bash is less impressive than one might think. https://www.trainboard.com/highball...ew-layout-project.123955/page-49#post-1249190
