Having a lot of fun planning my new layout. I've about used up a pad of graph paper making plans and modifying them. The input and suggestions I have received here is GREATLY appreciated, thank you all very much. Yesterday got a box in from Trainz with a bunch of switches and testing them out on the counter gave me a better idea of how large the layout will physically be and how to lay some different things out. Eliminated for good some ideas and cemented some others. Redrawing my plans [again, for the forty-leventh time, as Grandma would say] as I won a lowball bid on a Walthers Turntable, as it is bigger than the Atlas I was planning on, it will be worth the effort. Also, little things I have heard here have given me things to watch for, like choosing which folding table will be under the layout, to avoid a hump in the middle. Tomorrow, gonna pick up some 1x3s and more foamboard and hopefully get started next week actually building this thing. Thanks again folks! Your kindness to new/returning folks is immeasurable.
I have 2 folding table and put adjustable feet on each base to take care of the hump. All of them have a slight bump. What size will it be, 2' x 4' , 3' x 5', wondering? My bases are 2' x 4' and I have two of them to form an L at times!
It will b 6'4" long and 32"-36" deep. I have track on hand so I will be physically laying it out to see how deep I can actually go/need. I have a very talented and artistic great-niece and I will have her paint some backdrops for me.
Realized I have a good slope with the floor of the porch having such a slope built in for water drainage. So will have to figure out how high a wedge to build in under the layout or else have a racetrack in the yard!
Realized the Walther's Turntable will have to have a motor under it [it's the discontinued 110' one] so I might need to go to 1x4s for the depth needed. Do any of you have that turntable and can give me the depth needed?
Well, stole the kitchen table to try and physically see if I could make the Gorre & Daphetid layout work within my space constraints and not going under the 11" minimum radius. It worked! Next step is to lift up the tracks to check the elevation changes. I am hoping with the longer length and larger radii to get it under 3 degrees, it lists 4 degree on the track plan in it's original size. BTW it's Track Plan 17 in 101 plans for model railroads.
Started a new thread for this project. https://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?threads/gun-creek-branch-of-the-gorre-daphetid.146632/
