Well another weekend is behind us. Did you get everything done you planned on?

Not much for me. Saturday turned out to be a honey do day and I spent more time away from the workshop that what I had planned. Sunday however I was able to spend all day in the shop. Not much was done but I did work on a schematic for the finishing of my wiring and future control panel. For now the layout is wired in blocks but it will be DCC soon.

So how about you? Did you get everything done you set out to do? Track work, bench work or detail work? Let us know. We'll do it all over again on Friday the 8th, Until then...

    High Greens!

Well, yes I did! Unfortunately, I didn't plan anything, as we went skiing. I caught a cold and never made it out to the mountain. And I was rooting for the 49ers. If nothing else, subsequent days should be great by comparison.

Didn't plan much and didn't accomplish much. I am kind of at a stand still due to so many projects being weather dependent. I have 4 or 5 locomotives all detailed and ready to roll over to the paint shop but due to cold snowy weather they have to remain parked until weather breaks. I need detail parts, so I have some cars on Ebay to use sales toward detail parts for additional locomotives.

Budget cutting has also began on the G&OM. Baby on the way due May 17, so the wife won't work past middle of April. Need to keep stashing away cash for later, so the hobby is the first spending cut.

I was able to get my household chores done and also put down some track on a T-Trak switching module. Now I have to look over my stash of building kits to pick out the structures that i'll build for the modules. I wanted to make some trees for my towns museum layout but it was too cold to work outdoors.

I had quite the productive modelling weekend-achieved by not doing a single piece of homework! (This week is going to be hell, and I accept that in the wake of getting so much done). I was able to get my whole fascia up, and round the edges. I'll say this-hardboard is not the easiest thing in the world to work with lol.

It's two layers laminated and it turned out much better than I was expecting it to. A few areas need some filling (picking up mud and or woodfiller this afternoon) but other than that it's pretty great :-D

I finished three Saginaw Valley Railway locomotive models that had been sitting on the workbench for several weeks.

The GP38 also had a DCC decoder installed. The three units will join two CORP GP38s I finished several months ago to bring a sense of Thumb area railroading to my N scale layout.

No real modeling this weekend per se but a lot of model railroading and related activities going on. (even some railfanning!) First was an ops session on a new (to me) layout in the area. A rather large n-scale layout depicting a protolanced NP version of the Oregon Trunk set in the late 60's immediately prior to BN. Pretty amazing layout and fun ops session.

Then, I picked up an old computer desk that I bought "on the cheap" to use as a workbench. As an apartment dweller, I've had to be creative over the years as far as space considerations and as such never really had a dedicated workspace. (and I will fully blame my lack of progress on any previous project or layout on this fact!!! lol) Truthfully, I've had "old faithful", a modeling "tray" that my uncle made for me when I was in middle school. For sentimental and other reasons I've always tried to make it work, and I built my "method" around it. But as all things do....change is afoot. I had old faithful sitting on a built-in shelf at my apartment and one of the brackets gave way causing it to tumble to the ground. Amazingly, I only lost one GMM roofwalk out of a handful of small projects I had going at the time but...the pine workspace area on old faithful cracked clean in half. It's certainly repairable, and I'm not tossing it in the foreseeable future, but I decided I would try a different path now. It was a tough decision because I don't like excessive furniture simply because of the need to move every few years. But this desk was compact enough, light enough, and cheap enough that I pulled the trigger.

As you can see, my Trainboxesplus boxes stack nicely on top. Ott-lite to the left and a freebie floor lamp with Daylight florescent bulb to the right provide illumination. My "20% Tools" (that do 80% of the work) fit in the cubby hole (red tool caddy) or below in the cabinet. I trimmed a cutting board and attached it straight to the desktop with the industrial strength foam tape. I'm finding that the "CD Slots" are useful on several fronts...I was able to use the kickstand on my multimeter to slide underneath the plastic slot piece to hold it conveniently at eye level and I can tuck the leads into the slots to hold them. And you can see I already had my eye protection hanging there. I even decorated, with some of my latest purchases--an O-scale Coalveyor, HO-scale RESCAR CF7, and and N-scale Trincool reefer--all related to projects I'm currently working on.

Now I just need to get cracking on my Layout Party goals!

That's a neat little setup you've got going there Doug. I too am an apartment dweller, and my work bench consists of a piece of 1/4" ply laid across two ottomans in the living room while I sit on the couch -_- I feel inspired by what you've done-especially given that I have a space where something like this would work :-D on to desk hunting!

Yeah, I'm not sure why it took me this long to take the plunge. The desk doesn't really take up much more space than my stack of train boxes. I've only had it in place for three days now but it's just nice to be able to plop down and have all the lighting and tools right there ready to go....normally I have to gather everything and set it up, etc.

Well, check craigslist, hit some garage sales, or check out the second hand stores....those old computer desks are plentiful.
