From the DRGW Yahoo Group: I just found out from my father that Mr. Jim Ozment of Golden, Colorado passed away. Apparently apparently was 74-75. He was D&RGW Utah Division Engineer during the Thistle, Utah landslide and line relocation project of 1983. He was an acclaimed photographer, historian, mentor , author and friend who will be missed. James Belmont Salt Lake City From what I've read, services are planned. Date/Time are TBD. He was a great person. I always enjoyed talking to him, even briefly, during the Rail fair shows in Golden twice a year. Also had the chance to be in attendance when he did a monthly railroad club program one night, on the standard gauge conversion of the Monarch Branch. He will be missed by many!
Another great book, for the DRGW fan is: Rio Grande Trackside with Jim Ozment By James Sandrin A look back on the DRGW through the camera of Jim Ozment, during his years of employment by the Rio Grande, in both Colorado and Utah. Color photos from about 1955 through about 1968. Maybe a book review is in order??
I read about this on the Grande yahoo list. A major loss to the Grande community. His images can be seen at a site I just recently found: www.westernrailimages.com . I have that book, and it's a beaut.
Yes, this was announced on the Yahoo Groups Rio Grande Email list I've been a member of since the mid-1990's. Sad news indeed. I bought Rio Grande Trackside with Jim Ozment by James Sandrin back around 1998 or 99. The book is one of my favorites and covers the mid-1950's through about 1970, there is after all a picture of the Rio Grande Zephyr. =P I have to assume Jim Ozment continued to photograph in the 70's and 80's but that may have been saved for another book never published? The website listed in another post here has many of the photo's which are in the book in case you want a sense of it.
How sad, I love his book and have read through it several times for reference. He will truly be missed.
Yes,very sad indeed. I remember reading his "Track Side" book years ago & thinking wow what a lucky bloke ,the places he's been & seen. A fav book of mine. A great loss. Condolences to his family!
