I understand that JnJ has changed hands. Does anyone have any experience with the new owners. They have a good looking GP15-1 shell I'm interested in, plus a AMTRAK Genesis shell. Any one have experiences with their power chassis? How easy is it to use their shells? Any tips/trick are appreciated MOPAC 1
MoPac1- I have been to the same website, and I wanted to order the GP15-1 shell too. You don't need to buy the custom frame from JnJ, because the Atlas GP9/RS11(?) frames fit perfectly. I'm going to just buy the shell and use the GP9 frame. All you have to do is mill a little of the frame where the shell has difficulty fitting. Hope that helped, and I'll make that phone call this afternoon...hehehe. Dave North Look Ahead, Look South Southern Railway ------------------
I have a SDF45 JnJ shell, which I fitted to a Kato SD45 chassis. I am very pleased with the end result. May go for the Genesis shell, but what drive would it need? ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
I was thinking that my self Alan. I went to open a book and because of my broken arm, I said screw it! So does any one know? Thanks! ------------------ Craig Martyn BLMA(best looking models around) Custom painting and detailing **Soon to come, N scale detail parts!!!
Alan- Do you mean an FP45 shell fitted on an SD45 frame? I didn't know JnJ had an SDF45 shell on their website! Unless you meant the FP45 shell. Could you clarify this? Dave North Look Ahead, Look South Southern Railway ------------------
Well, being a painter I get to paint a lot of different things. One thing I did was JnJ F45, so yes, they did have them, though I don't know if they still do. ------------------ Craig Martyn BLMA(best looking models around) Custom painting and detailing **Soon to come, N scale detail parts!!!
How could the JnJ Trains F45 fit on a Kato SD45 frame and look right. In the website, the shell is marked FP45, which has a significant increase in truck centers and overall length than the SD45. Will that still look right? Any help is appreciated! Dave North Look Ahead, Look South Southern Railway
Check out the post by Steve on the Atlas site for more info on the gp15 chassis and shell combo. I have several of the gp15 chassis from JnJ but as of yet no shells.
I acquired my F45 shell from JnJ before the 'new management' took over. I see on the new website that the F45 is not now shown, just the FP45. The F45 (now SDF45 on the Santa Fe/BNSF) fits right onto the SD45 chassis. - And it looks great ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery

My suggestion is ask lots of questions before you buy a shell. I learned this the hard way. Here's my story: I have two Kato GP50's with shells that have lived a full life, and thought it might be neat to replace them with new shells. To be safe, I decided to order one JnJ GP50 extended cab shell. When it arrived, I found that I shouldn't have ordered it sight unseen. For those unfamiliar with Kato GP50's, the frame, handrails and walkways are an integral part of the power chassis, and not part of the shell. The JnJ shell is molded in one piece including the frame, walkways and pulling faces. Needless to say, it will not work with my Katos. After the fact, I e-mailed JnJ to ask what the shell might fit, which they responded that it should fit an Atlas GP40 or GP40-2 chassis. Unfortunately, I dont have any. Needless to say, I now have a $25 styrene shelf ornament. Oh well, it's only money, right? Learn from my mistakes, ask the questions first. Also, the JnJ shells come with no directions or accessories (handrails, stanchions, etc...). Because of these facts, I wouldn't recommend that a beginner attack this kind of project without help. ------------------ Kevin Stevens www.trainweb.org/KernJunction
the tank shell cost $20 but need a bit of work on the bottom of it to hide the join, also i had to pay import duty and VAT on it as well, the etched walkwys are nice but do not fit very well there is no risers for it so it just sort of sits on top of the tank, its worth having one of them (in black GATX of course) but im not sure if its worth getting anyore unless you need a lot of LPG, propane or AA ------------------ wheres all the C636's???? stickymonk.com Matts Photo gallery
About the F45/FP45 thing, both are still listed on the JnJ price list, along with a bunch of other interesting stuff. (Did y'all know that JnJ made a Trainmaster shell long before Atlas announced theirs?) The pictures on the website show just a small fraction of the products available. You can request a copy of the price list in .pdf format (no pictures, though ). I think the old management charged a fee, but the new guy will send it for free. A paper copy is still $2. My question is about the quality of the products. Could some of you guys that have had experience with this stuff shed some light on this? Are the shells accurate? Is the detailing sharp or crude? I've been eyeing that 44-tonner on the price list, but is it worth $150? Dwight
Hello Dwight, welcome to TrainBoard I have only bought the F45 shell, and was very pleased with it. I had thought that the detail would not be great, but was pleasantly surprised. The fans are particularly well represented. ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery Alan's European Gallery Alan's British Steam Gallery
Thanks, Alan. Glad to be here Good or bad detail or whatever, you have to admit, they do offer some stuff that just isn't available except sometimes in brass. Whenever I get around to starting my 'Houston passenger trains' project, I plan on getting a couple of the Mopac E7's so I won't have to try to add portholes to a LL E7. As for a chassis for the Genesis shell, I would guess that you'll have to stretch an existing frame to do it. Unless you can get a chassis from Overland, but I don't think they do that for N scale, do they? Dwight
