well i think w/ the cleaning thing i'll just go with the goo gone clean and use my track cleaning car since all of your suggestions all cost $$ that i of course never have, lol. and the suggestion of getting my dad to do anyting is as good as asking a rock to marry you lol. and my mom is about as technically inclined as she is at lifting 1,000 lb weight (none what so ever) but the scienic stuff i bet she could help me.

locomotive - sending that book sounds great... i think i'll take u up on that offer.. if u have paypal my email address is myawesome454@hotmail.com (i should have 5 bux or so in that account) if u don't i'll mail the $$$ to u. my real email is urworst1dream923@hotmail.com i used the other one before i got the new one (long story). and the thing on the nickel silver n brass track i can notice a speed improvement on the nickel over the brass but its not much and speed isn't the key its working and realism so my 50 yr old track will work just fine till it runs outta metal to melt off from its high use.. well i've gotta run

thank you for all of your replies.

This hobby is also a learning experience and as forum members we can help fill that void and get you up & operating.

We also must recognize that you are not in the 28% income bracket and that you cannot commit all your limited dollars to this hobby.

Our recommendations should also be prudent.

okay, lets see here... i think what you are trying to say and correct me if i'm wrong is that I have limited financial resources right? and yes i do... i am building a new comp. this summer n that is going to be around $500 and that leaves me with $200 left from my job this summer (lawn mowing what fun?) so no new engines and cars since i already have enough and pretty much all should go to the sceinery and cleaning products but i also know i'm probably not going to get this all finished even though u really can never be finished... its always a work in progess like everything else.

Well i think that about sums it up... does anybody have anything to say on if or if not that is enough money to put me through the summer? i sure hope so...

Thank you for all your great repsonses once again

We 'er all eyes on this next ?

What ever prompted a 13 year old to bother getting involved with trains?

3 Oaks, on the eastern shores of Lake MI is not
a hub. but it's on the map.

    Justin-

When I was your age, I did the exact same thing for my RR hobby money. During the summer, I mowed lawns. Pulled weeds. Pumped gas at the local garage. Swept their lot. Helped bring in hay from other farms. Split and stacked fire wood. In winter, I shoveled snow. Hauled fire wood. Whatever I could do to move construction of my empire along. In the end, all that enjoyment I had from using my earnings was well worth the sweat beforehand. While you are earning, and saving for the next purchase, the planning and anticipation can be a lot of fun as well.

    :D

I mowed yards, hoed gardens, washed cars (not to mention ran the washing machine), did scut work in the kitchen, had a paper route, and did yard work for cash. It isn't supposed to be all soda & skittles, but you do what you gotta do to get folding green in your pocket.

If what you have is all you can afford for now, go with it 'til you can afford better. Save some money back, a little at a time, until you can either mail-order, get something on eBay (probably will have to have your mother do that for you), or even for a train show.

Heck, I started with Marx O27 trains (used) that my Dad got from a friend in Wyoming. They weren't much, but they got me started in the hobby, and that was 38 years ago.

Hang in there, and don't forget to ask questions of us old fellers every now & then.

    I understand more now Justin.

Maybe I could be sort of like a Grandfather and help you when you need some? You can feel free to email me anytime, and I'll help you over the rough spots. You really aren't alone here, you see? Most of us have had our poor times, and a few times when we had money. You should have enough now to get through the summer if you use it prudently.

Spend a good deal of time laying your track. When you have really good smooth track, most of the problems will go away. OK?

There is no need to feel alone or that you have no help. I care about you, and I'm sure there are others that do too, at least here.

Email old Watash and lets see if we can't work something out, OK?

Watash: There could be a compliance problem here under Michgian statute law. Since Justin is domicled in Michigan you may have to re-certiify your Grandfather skillls.

Michigan does not recognize Texas certification and therefore it is not transferrable.

If you go out and buy the MAAS, deduct it off the $5.00 shipping charge for the Walthers Reference Book.

Equally important: CLEAN LOCO WHEELS to pick up the current.

    I cleaned a 1968 HO steam loco made for the Lionel corp by athearn. The first cleaning in 35 years. S U P E R J O B.

There a couple of different cleaning methods, depending on the electrical pick-ups, steam or diesel.

Generally you have to power up the track and
place one truck on the MAAS treated old T-Shirt,((over the track)
and the other truck on the powered rail and let the wheels spin clean then reverse the truck.

Hate to see you go for now, and will await your return. Do try to make it back before you are in your 70's because there isn't much old stuff to talk about then! Have a good trip old Buddy!

Remember TrainFreek, if you decide to sell some or all your trains, email me with a list of what you have and maybe I can help you out by buying them. OK?

You can always drop in, or even just lurk about. You don't have to have trains to be a member here you know!

    Keep in touch old Buddy!
