Hi. Several months ago I posted about designing a layout in my home based on the facilities arropund Denison Texas/MKT. I receieved many generous posts and am especialy thankful to Triplex for his drawings.
I have begun construction but have gone much simpler than the ideas presented and have added a strong freelance component to incorporate things "cuz I like them" but may not belong period wise or location.
Concept is still evolving but basicaly I am representing Denison's what is currently the Ray yard (compressed) and some local features west toward Pottsboro through the imaginary town of Mimiville, to honor my very supportive and patient girl friend.
I will be modeling the Wye to the north of town, and folded the ray yards over on top of Denison to get the depot area and some industries I made up-"cuz I like them". I should be able to model "the viaduct" into Down Town and at least my little block of Day Street.
Pottsboro I will probably represent with a publihed track plan adopted to fit the layout and include the tie plant Frisco Bob alluded to and some of the cotton facilities that used to exist there. I will also add a tiny corner of Lake Texoma (A few years ahead of its time) and the Texoma Dam. These are instantly recognizable features to visitors etc.
I may also represent in part the siding that served Perrin AFB, now Grayson Cty airport where I got my Pilot's license.
I should be able to justify numerous interchanges and lots of through traffic.
When I get a track plan and pics digitized I will post them. Many things have slowed me, financialy and I had to build a bathroom and some other serious wok to my old house.

Keep the pictures coming when you start construction! There is always an eager crowd out here to dish out encouragement!

I can relate to your comments on "other serious work" around the house. Since I have started my layout we have build a new drainage system around the house, a complete new first floor and roof and a new heating system. Today I have builders coming in to quote for the reconstruction of the garage roof and a new patio... But it is always good to know that the layout is waiting for me and making (slow) progress.

    Cheers
    Dirk

 Sounds like your concept is really beginning to flesh itself out. I like the free lance flair, doesn't lock you into anything you have to do. With some good influences you've narrowed down what you want which is some of the most exciting parts of the whole modeling process.

Thanks for the encouragement. It was a little discouraging there for awhile to have a dedicated room for my layout but having to build a new bathroom, re-roof my out buildings, retile the kitchen, replace kitchen cabinets, level the foundation under the add on..et etc etc ....not to mention a hundred other little things.

Wish I could help you with the tie plant trackplan, but the place was pretty much gone when I first arrived in the area. There was some narrow-gauge trackage and at least one center-cab critter used at the plant- I believe the book "Katy Power" may have a pic or two.

Best bet is to either check into the museum in the Katy Depot in Denison, or join the MKT group at Yahoo-it's got lotsa knowledgeable Katy folks there.

Do you know about the layout at the "flea market" building (former Katy office building, across Main St. from the depot)?. A few locals have been working on modeling Ray Yard as it existed pre-Borg. The trackplan for the yard is pretty close to what the real thing looked like. The layout is in a room off to the side of the building (enter the door, go left down the aisleway, go right, and look to your left for a side door- it's kinda hidden).

Yes! I stumbled onto them while shopping with the girl friend. I have a hard time getting there on Saturdays when they meet but I was able to look the layout over. Im sure they are a good resource of information.
