They are “consistent with reductions required to keep warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels,” KCS noted.

SBTi—a partnership of CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)—approved KCS’s plan to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions intensity 42% per million gross ton-miles by 2034 from a 2019 base year, according to the railroad.

In January, KCS submitted a letter to SBTi committing to setting targets. Through that commitment and now with targets approved, KCS said it is building on steps already taken to lower emissions, including work to improve fuel efficiency and investments in fuel-saving technologies during implementation of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR).

“Kansas City Southern recognizes the vital role that rail plays in lowering overall transportation emissions,” President and CEO Patrick J. Ottensmeyer said. “As a champion of the environment, our pledge to achieve these approved emissions reduction targets reinforces our commitment to further improving fuel efficiency and lowering emissions in support of a more sustainable North American supply chain.”
