today I finally started a project I have wanted to do for a long time. The first photo is what I'm trying to achiev not maybe 100% but a close enough copy. I started off with a Walthers caboose with bay windows I bought on ebay After discussing with Gary (Gats) on how to approach the project, Gary marked out where I should cut, here is the result. I then filed both ends to almost a perfect match I used 4 strips of styrene to glue both ends together, this help strengthen the join. [ November 21, 2005, 04:46 AM: Message edited by: Colonel ]
The next shot shows the model back in one piece, you can see the top will still need some filling before painting. I also filed down the ridges on the ends of the caboose. I used the chassis from an Atlas cupola caboose. I cut down the weight so the shorten body would fit. I added some railings off the original caboose and panels on one of the end. Next weekend I'm hoping to fill the windows then paint the model before adding the bay windows. Not sure if I will have the decals by next weekend so I will just have to be patient
Looking good, Paul. Not too hard once you get your teeth into it, eh? I look forward to seeing the finished product as well.
Great start. I was told this series of caboose was built by MoPac as road cabooses and were not really transfer cabooses. Would look good at the end of any MoP freight.
Paul, That brings back a lot of memories. Use to work on those up in Omaha Nebr at the Mop shop. Nice job so far.
Thanks guys, yes Russ you are correct i'll be utilising this on my mainline freight. I'm off to the hobby shop during my lunch break today to purchase some plastic putty
Maybe if we all make enough of these cabeese then somebody will make one. BTW looks great I can not wait to see it painted red and decaled up. If you model mopac this is a must have in my opinion.
thanks guys last night I painted the model in undercoat ready for the caboose red. If all goes well tonight I may paint it
Today I finished painting the transfer caboose and hope to add some decals tomorrow although still waiting on the blue buzzsaw decals to arrive. More pics tomorrow
Very impressive Paul Surprising what can be done when you take the plunge Look forward to the finished, decaled model.
Colonel: Great job on the caboose! Good kitbash. Soon, you will be building one completely from sheet styrene!
