Working on it. I have most of the artwork drawn, just waiting for my chemicals to show up. Been reading up on all the brass engine assembly articles in the library at work, think I have an idea of how to do it )]
Joe; Dido to Johns comment about a switcher, i think Z scale needs a north american switcher. If i kit was made i would bt it, and if a loco where available, i would eat them up..:teeth: Tony B..
Tony, I was looking for something that would fit on our GP-35 Chassis and the Green Goat fit the bill. It's a very modern protptype and only a few roads are using them right now, so the appeal would be limited as a production item in Z. I think a real winner would be the CF-7 and I thought about "fudging" it on the 35 chassis. After years and years of having to build to tight tolerances at Disney, I'm enjoying being able to relax a bit with my hobby and do things that are close.
The thing about production Green Goats or CF-7s is that there are many differences between each unit in most cases. Here is a CF-7 a couple miles from me: There are a 1 or 2 others there as well.
With Green Goats, there are at least three phases. Also, some are built on EMD frames and some (read: all but one of UP's units) on GE frames. With CF7s, the main difference is angled vs. rounded cab roof. It appears that most CF7s still working have the angled roof.
With the Green Goat I at least have the right wheel base (or close to it)..the CF 7 is shorter and I think the stubby-ness of the engine is it's strong point. Still.... I did cast up some chassis this weekend and will be extending them and see if I can get this KM project off the matt. I also scanned the drawings into my computer and will be working on the brass etchings later this week. Kids are visiting their Mom for the Holidays and I need something to do so I don't go crazy!!! ) Joe MTL
Joe, I though you have to be crazy to hang around Loren. What I really lke is to see some of your work. Did you finish your MP15 or your high nose GP35. We want pictures of it.
John' I want to see some of my work as well ! I gave the High Nose to a guy who was working on one last year since It really wasn't going to fit into the CORP stuff. I have the chassis of the MP15 done and ran it during our Thanksgiving Train Show, need to wrap the whole thing up and move forward with it. I got side tracked with the Green Goat cause it seemed a bit easier to work on, but I do need to finish the MP. Joe
Ohh, this started out as a thread on K-M's and then, Green Goats, CF7's and MP15's all came up. All of these are on my long term project list. Unfortunately, we just did the family budget for 2007 and thanks to having to replace my washer and drier last week, my train budget (actually my entire hobby budget) has been slashed by around 60%. That doesn't get me very far. At the same time, my wife is wondering why there is nothing on my Christmas list besides trains. ;-) I can see I'm going to lose some weight this year since I'll be spending ALL of my lunch money instead of just some of it on trains. Randy
I hate it when other things like washers and dryers come up to ruin the hobby budget. Our oven went out and after examining the wiring, I decided I want a new one instead of repairing it, but it will only set me back 3 GP35's to replace. Our of all the locos mentioned, they are all nice choices, but none are NP? Make my switcher an SW1200 please? An RS1 or 3 would also work! I have seen photo's of the DRGW K-M's and think that color scheme is better than an SP scheme, Although I have not seen pictures of them, I am assuming SP repainted them in Bloody Nose colors?
Hah, when I was poor and under-employed after college, I used to weigh all my purchases by how many weeks of groceries it would buy. If you weigh your appliance replacements against how many GP35's you can buy, I think you need to join Locomotives Annonymous. "Hi, my name is Randy and it's been one day since my last locomotive arrived in the mail." ;-) (Actually, two Akia ZJ sets arrived today, ordered before the washer and dryer.) At least i think the water heater is just the thermocouple. On the positive side, this may drive me to actually finish all those kits that I've bought and maybe even try some scratchbuilding again. ;-) Randy
Hey Randy, how about doing delivery for Dominos in weekends. Lots of extra cash. No waiting for payday.
About 4 years ago I was laid off for 10 months. I could not even get an interview anywhere! I would spend a couple hours every morning looking for a job, then I would spend 16 hours nocking out kits that I had accumulated over the previous 10 years. I was almost done with all the kits when I finally got a job! Too bad it was all N Scale!mg:
joe, is the MP15 powered only by one truck? if not how did you remove the large flywheel. you HAD to have removed the flywheel to shorten the chassis. you used to have a picture of it on yahoo groups photos (Z) but i don't see it anymore. what brass details are you making up? for KM?? dave f.
Dave, Right now, yep the MP is only has rear wheel drive. When I get around to finishing the chassis then I'll order a motor or two without any flywheels, turn down some thinner brass wheels to fit and go from there. I don't expect to push/pull more than 4-5 cars in a yard setting or on a short line so I'm not going for brute weight here. I suspect I will pick up some weight with all the brass on the shell.
joe, i'm looking to modify a chassis similarly for a switcher. if you turned your chassis around so the drive truck is under the cab, you can fill that up with weight and deliver better pulling performance. that's my plan for my attempt. i look forward to seeing what you build. dave f.
