I just asked Phil himself about the AR&M issue: "I will decide in two months about closing or downsizing. Phil Anderson" Great stuff, Jeff!!!
Yea. my LHS started carrying Color Canyon products a few months ago. Their finest ballast is smaller than even Arizona Rock's. Really nice stuff.
Thanks gang! The color canyon ballast looks excellent, but there is not name of the ballast types next to the sample pictures. They do show dark gray, but I can't find any light gray on the site. But check out this intro pic: I do think I should make my next (hopefully last) ballast color more of a light gray / dark gray mix instead of light gray / black. I can remove the current ballast by soaking it with water and vacuuming it up. Here is a pic of the track I'd like to duplicate, c/o dansdepot.railfan.net. I'm going to have to get one of those rail painters and color the rails with light rust, and go over the ties with rust in some areas, while leaving others dark. Maybe a flagstone / dark gray mix might work?
I was thinking the same thing before I got the ballast shape how I liked it. The impression I get by the track now is that it reminds me of Unitrack as far as ballast shape, width, and height. It's nice to be able to weather the ties and rails before ballasting though, to get more contrast between the ties and ballast.
I got tired of working on the layout so I threw together a train and did a little Nfanning. Ah, that was relaxing. I need to finish the second half of the layout's track so I can run trains continuously. I could scenic this thing forever. There is so much more to do to it.
FD, great progress. Keep it up. Yes, scenicking and detailing can be done forever. No end. But worth it. (smile)
I'm taking a trip down to LA next week and will be stopping off in SLO to railfan the one and only cuesta pass in person. It's going to be great. Hopefully I'll come back full of scenicing ideas. This section needs a backdrop badly!
