In trying to convert a couple Kato dash-9s to MT couplers, I discovered that the newest road numbers have higher coupler box "holes" than the original run.

I was trying to insert the 2004s and they fit fine. But zowie, they sure changed the height of the coupler boxes between dash-9 runs!

Am I using the wrong couplers? Anybody know a remedy to match the "original" height of the SD40-2/dash 9 height?

    Thanks & stuff

If the coupler sets to HIGH...you will need to shim the coupler pocket where the coupler sits. MT couplers usually come with shims. If the coupler is to LOW...you will need to file the coupler pocket on the loco to get the right height.

Are you sure the loco shell is sitting down on the frame as it should? That could account for the difference in height. I doubt if Kato re-did the tooling in a run.

IIRC and according to Charlie Vlk, Kato did retool the pockets when they stopped putting rapidos on them.

Guess I'm not dreaming it eh?

Now what? Make a new pocket?
