    Flash, number one as pointed out by some of the others is poor lighting. Your brightest light should be coming from behind and overhead of the camera.
    Number two, get rid of the white paper behind the nose of the loco as it may through your light metering off. If your camera has adjustable metering points set it to center point only. This will help any time you are shooting something either very dark or very light colored against a contrasting background.
    For what its worth, while a little dark, I could see your light installation ok on my screen when I zoomed in on the nose. It was actually better than the "doctored" view which became too washed out and grainy to show the detail.

    Thanks. Good tips for me, especially about the white background. I noticed that when I take a picture in my florescent lighted train room and a corner of a natural sunlight window is in the picture. The natural sunlight washes everything out.
