This has probably been addressed already, but I was just wondering why Chessie System doesn't have a listing under Fallen Flags. Thanks.
Chessie System never a railroad There's probably no "Chessie System" because that appelation was never more than an advertising convenience. There never was a railroad company called the "Chessie System", it was always comprised of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Companies. It included the Western Maryland until it was merged into the B&O. :cat:
Hence the reason you used to see the "Chessie System Railroads" trade name used - C&O, B&O, WM constituting the railroads of the Chessie System.
We do have Fallen Flags for the B&O, and C&O. At one time, we did have these lumped together, under such a category. But some members even complained about B&O, and C&O being mixed into the same forum. So, we moved them out seperately again. Chessie System was much like Milwaukee Road, Monon Route, Soo Line. A nickname. Such as "Family Lines" was for the SCL, L&N, etc. Except, unlike those first three examples listed, it was never adopted as the Official railroad company name. Milwaukee Road was changed in 1985, and lasted less than a year. Monon only became official in 1956. Soo, in 1961. Sadly, there was little interest in WM. Personally, I wish there was more. Maybe someone can spur enough enthusiasm for this idea? Boxcab E50
Well, Tim - looks like it's up to us to spur the interest in WM! I have a few photos that I took back in the 1970's of WM units in Garrett, Indiana. Also, just got the new book from the C&O Historical Society "Chessie System Railroads in West Virginia" - chapter three is The Western Maryland.
I guess I don't know where to put images like this - it's Western Maryland power on the Chessie System (click on image to enlarge): and Used with permission and courtesy of the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society from Chessie System Railroads in West Virginia.
