Recently, I picked up a LifeLike GP-38. Does MicroTrains make a replacement pilot for this model? If not, which ASSEMBLED couplers make a good replacement? (My fat fingers and weak eyes make assembling couplers a REAL challenge) Thanks in advance for the help. Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. Either 1135 (pre 1995), or 1128, 1129, or 1130 (post 1995). These should do the trick. Othewise, go to the 1015 assembled
Jeff you will need to make a mounting pad under the pilot to bodymount couplers on the GP38.It's not really that difficult to do.After you build the pad center a 1015/16 coupler drill and tap a hole so that the coupler is centered then fill in around it with pieces of strip styrene.Of course after you do this MT will bring out a pilot kit for the GP38.
There's a company out there whose name I can't remember for sure (can't find my Walthers catalog, darn the luck), but I think it's Scale Replicas, that makes a pewter replacement pilot for the LL GP 38-2. This takes some filing and drilling and tapping, but the one I used worked better than the engine did.
I too am interested in this. If you remember who makes the pewter pilots , please let us know. Thanks! Russ Hoffman Valley RR
Scale Replicas did a pilot conversion - p/n's 504 original, 505 modern - and a loco detail kit - p/n 305 - for the LL GP38. Also there is a medium and large fuel tank available and several plows. I suspect they take the 1015/16 set-up. All are still available but may require a bit of a search. Hope this helps, Gary.
