Hi fellas, I have a opportunity to pick up a pair of these in BN paint from a friend. He says they are brand new, and the price is right, but I am wondering "am I just buying some glorified Bachmann engines?" I don't expect them to be Atlas quality but if I run them with an Atlas is it going to work? Thanks for your input. 2slim
I have a LL GP38, it is a little qick (NP if you put it ahead of slower engines)but I really do like it, it was a tick rough when I first had it, but after about an hour it was smooth as my bachmann -8. GL!! -
I have one of these, but they are nowhere near the quality of Atlas/Kato or new Lifelike. The truck frames are very 'flat', and the handrails are poor, running is not vey good. Mine will likely be 'retired'
I will agree with you on the poor performance of these units compared to Atlas and Kato. I have a couple and they are for mostly for show and not go!
I picked up a Geep on ebay, altho I bid on a SD7/9, I received a Geep *DOH!*, hi-short hood, BN, number 1994. Is this a GP19, or a GP20, or this GP38? It has a bell behind the cab, dynamic brakes, a small fuel tank, and 2 large air tanks mounted under the frame, in front of the rear truck. Help? Did LL ever come out with a SD7/9 in BN livery? I know they did GN...
Hemi, I believe you got the GP18, one of my faves as I use it as a 'poor mans GP9' for many conversions. I've also used an older GP38-2 and superdetailed it as a snowfighter with a Kato fuel tank and Sunrise and GMM details. Runs fairly well but the ones with the new mech. run much better.
Alan & Mike I too thought the handrails & side frames were sad, sometimes you can compensate for that if it runs good. My better judgement tells me I'd better pass and save for what I really want 1 or 2 Atlas SD7's in BN colors. Thanks fellas, if you ever run into me remind me to by you a beer!! 2slim
I purchased a pair of LL GP38-2 (one powered and one dummy SF and matching caboose (as a set)this summer. The price was something like $26. I placed them on long-term loan at the model railroad club I belong to and they seem to run and pull fine--over twenty freight cars on our flat layout.
