Wow, terrific work. I have that MTL weathered 40' NYC reefer too, I don't really have a need for it, but it looks great on my layout.

John, your work is outstanding! However, maybe would you have to hide the turnouts' mechanisms a little bit more?

    Dom,

I've been thinking about that. I might cover them with grass and weeds but I think I'll wait until the layout is complete because I am concerned about clogging up the mechanisms inside and about getting the cover opened later if I need to unstick a turnout. It's definitely on my list of things to do.

    John,
You might try taking off the cover to cover them with grass and weeds. Then you can put them back on without getting too much debris into the mechanism.

Hi Di Ho (as one of my LI buddies always greets me in his letters, yes we still write and mail letters back and forth to each other),

Gerd Kurz’s C-420 arrived a few days ago. What a beauty!! These photos do not do it justice. You have to see it first hand to see the unbelievable details that Gerd did on this loco, it is a definite “WOW”!

Here is the newest addition to my LIRR stable with it’s sisters RS-3 and CPA 20-5 also custom made by Gerd. You can also see in background of the photos that the Oil Transfer Station’s gravel parking lot is near completion and the next business on the layout is close to completion. It is Charles J. King Inc which in real life not located on Dutch Kills but further South-East on Newtown Creek. I “relocated” it on my layout using artistic liberties because I wanted an auto salvage yard that loaded wrecked cars onto barges (this is not what Charles J. King Inc does in real life, they’re a scrap metal & recycle company but I liked the name for my layout’s auto salvage yard business). I’ll post more photos and information about CJK Inc next month after a few more Z scale details arrive in the mail.

    Enjoy!

    John

Nice shot! You have been very deliberate with you choices for locomotives and I have to say you have wound up with a fantastic trio!

    Thanks guys!

PW&NJ - missed you this morning. Sorry.

Gerd - When will you posting photos of your creations on your website? That is one way to "keep" these locos forever.

So another month has gone by and another business on my LIRR layout is complete. It took a while because of all the details and modifications to some pieces that I had to do but the Charles J. King Iron and Scrap Metal company is now complete along with a barge load of scrap autos. As a reminder Charles J. King Inc in real life is not located on Dutch Kills but further South-East on Newtown Creek. I “relocated” it on my layout using artistic liberties because I wanted an auto salvage yard that loaded wrecked cars onto barges (this is not what Charles J. King Inc does in real life, they’re a scrap metal & recycle company but I liked the name for my layout’s auto salvage yard business).

The ground is real dirt shifted and glued down with numerous grass, weeds, vegetation and a Stink tree to add flavor. The main office is a Artitec railway workers building. Next to it is a heavily modified GCLaser GCL-5298 Tool House; the trash and parts hanging around the tool house come from my scrap box. The fence is from BAZ Models BAZ-AF-001 Add-On Fence for Nail Brothers Salvage stained a light maple stain and then given a black India ink wash. The scrap autos, derelict flatbed truck and the crane are from Paula’s Hobbies / SAVON ART. I modified the crane by painting it yellow, weathering it and adding on a grapple from Railway Express Miniatures # 2043 (its N scale). The wheeled scoop loader # 4310023 is from ZundMeer. The new pink Cadillac that Mr. King is driving with his date is from oldturtle1947. Finally the cargo barge is from NSM and I loaded it with scrap autos from Paula’s Hobbies / SAVON ART. I made the sign on the front fence using PowerPoint in font size 4, printed it out and glued it to a piece of thin cardboard. This was a fun project and section of my layout to work on.

Next is the West Chemical company which will be completely fenced in and filled with 55 gallon drums from NSM and NZT. However that will have to wait until after Thanksgiving.

Lastly I figured I post a photo of the RS-3 that Gerd Kurz did for me a few months ago. I realized that I never posted a photo of just the RS-3 by itself. Gerd did a fantastic job of modifying a SEARAILS RS-3 shell adding numerous details to it. He is the best out there for custom locos.

I hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving!

    All the best,

    John

Great stuff, like that scrap yard. If I may suggest: from my experience scrap yards are typically heavily contaminated and soaked with oil, brake and radiator fluid. And single parts and tires everywere.

    BTW: thanks for the flowers!

Gerd - you are 100% correct. I still have some "grime" to add all over the scrap yard.

BurlingtonRoute - those swirls are leaking oil from the bottom of Dutch Kills. I did them with Polly-S Oily Black F4114326 in random places on the water to simulate pollution and the oil that seeps from the bottom of Dutch Kills (see P.O.V.'s Borders . Environment . Water . The Invisible Creek | PBS and Up The Creek: Sets Sail on Newtown Creek | The City Concealed). Dutch Kills and Newtown Creek are THE most polluted waters in the US.
