Thanks Guys. Plenty of reading and veiwing to do. I also received my rio grande color guide to freight and passenger equip.
Since this thread was more about proto info on freight cars, I didn't post my loco books, or any other proto books.. Glad to see you got the stuff you wanted! The Color Guide by Mr. Eager is a great book. I had once been inspired to build a Vert-a-Pac, pages 67-68...
Rio Grande in Color, all 3 vols.. Another must-have! 'Never on Wednesday' is a time-warp--the pics really take you back in time!
Andy has a great collection--one correction, however. That's supposed to be R.C. Farewell's 'Rio Grande Secret Places v 1 and 2' You can find this wonderful book at Colo. RR Museum, and online at N Scale Supply's website. Most Denver hobby shops stock it, I think Caboose Hobbies has it as well. I am unsure about Mizell Trains, though. One of these days, I want the RG Trackside, 'Portrait of a Silver Lady', Jackson Thode's 'Century of RG Passenger Trains', and a few others that escape me at the moment. I would also like to add to my collection: nearly anything on the DNW&P, and D&SL over Rollins Pass. I had read a borrowed copy of 'The Moffat Road', and it is a Fantastic read! OOH! how could I forget a favorite book: Robert LaMassena's 'Rio Grande- Superpower Railroad of the Rockies' ALL D&RGW steam!!!
Thanks for the correction... I keep calling them Hidden Places rather than secret places. At the weekend whilst I was at the local NMRA show with my layout a trader had Ruler of the Rockies by RC Farewell and Twilight of the Rio Grande by Wesley Fox(signed). I manged to snap them up big time.
Both are out of print many years. published 1987 and 1984 respectively. Ruler of the Rockies has a colour dust jacket and some great B & W photos, It is in a similar format to Secret Places with a fair amount of text....DRGW history etc. Twilight is B & W throughout with extended captions to the photos. Photos in both mainly taken after mid 1970's. I recommend both if you come across a copy.
Well, darnit, I need more books now! My list just got 2 titles longer! I met Mr. Farewell at Mike Dannemann's layout open house in 2004. Very knowledgeable!
Thanks for all the suggestions and info. I received rio grande in color volume 1. It's nice to have a couple new books.
Which ones? Coal trains would be better covered in "Rio Grande Color guide to freight equipment". Tunnel mtrs is very well covered in "Rio Grande Diesels Vol. 2" by Strapac/Shade Tree books.I think all 3 volumes of RIO Grande Diesels is a must have for any DRGW diesel info.
Agreed. Volume 2 is hard-to-acquire item. Very expensive on ebay, when you can find them. Vol 3, I got it at Caboose Hobbies. Vol 1 is hard to find, but not nearly as difficult as the second volume.
