Greetings, My son is currently working on a project on Saskatchewan. This convinced me that it was time to add grain hoppers and a grain elevator to my collection. (I got spending authority from Management because this is a school project ) Thanks, nbrail Can anyone point me towards where I can find good information....maybe a plan on how to build a good grain elevator.
There have been many kits made in both HO and N scale of grain elevators large and small. "Model Railroader" has published quite a few articles over the years about building grain elevators, with plans. Suggest you go to "Model Railroader"'s article search engine, it will tell you where such articles are published in all the model magazines. it is accessible through the www.trains.com website.

Hope this helps, Marc
Marc, This is an excellent site and one of the most comprehensive on Grain Terminals. Here is a sample of one of the grain terminals that are listed. The site has hundreds of pictures of grain terminals
nbrail Here is a smaller grain co-op elevator near Ernfold, Saskatchewan and a kitbashed model based on the Walthers kit Here are two links to Walthers N elevator kits (plastic) http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3238 http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3225 eNjoy Don B [ 03 June 2001: Message edited by: dbn160 ] [ 03 June 2001: Message edited by: dbn160 ]
You may want to try out this URLGrain Elevator InfoWhile this elevator is constructed in G scale I think it is an excellent example of a typical Saskatchewan Grain Elevator. I saw this model at a meet recently held in Saskatoon and it is superb. Unfortunately, we here in Saskatchewan are seeing fewer and fewer of these praire skyscrapers. It was once that there was at least one every seven miles. Wheat Pool people tell me there will likely be one every 50 miles in the not so distant future. ( just had to try out one of the new graemlins) [ 03 June 2001: Message edited by: Grantha ]
I've found Grainnet's site a great resource for prototype grain and seed industry-related suppliers and equipment. Some of the linked site have great files for downloading, including drawings and dimension tables. Check it out. Gary.
There's an N scale Toledo Grain Elevator Plan at www.detnews.com/metro/hobbies/hotbox/spring94/grain/grain.htm that may be of use to you. Hotbox also has some other useful plans Hope this will help Shortliner
There is a lot of great information here already. I lived in Saskatchewan for a number of years and have seen first hand the declining use of many small town elevators. They were built originally in almost every small town to serve the local farming area when transportation from the farms was either horse drawn or the first trucks. It was also a reason to get supplies and other goods. What has happened though is trucks got better and farmers were willing to drive further to bigger centres to deliver the wheat. Part of the attraction were the pubs that welcomed farmers after a busy day. This led to a decline in whet deliveries to many small town elevators and so they are being torn down. It is a sad sight to see but it is all part of progress. Some small towns have disappeared too. At least we can model to an era we wish to. Below is a link to my prairie town. I know there is a real Harris but I have taken liberties. Harris on the MAT
