Does anyone have pictures of rail served fertilizer facilites, especially for receiving shipments? Is there a site that might show examples of this? I'd like to incorporate this into a layout I'm working on, and wanted to get some ideas.
It would seem that all of the pictures have been taken down. Do you suppose the Government dosen't want you to know about these places. ANFO you know At any rate, it depends on the type of fertilizer you want to make. Look for pictures of refineries for petro chemical products. Look for pictures of lots of cows if you are making the natural stuff. there will be a plant nearby to process the byproducts of feeding cattle. On the Santa Fe & Cajon Pass, one of the biggist shippers is the Bandini Co., manufacturers of "Purple Plush" Lawn Fertilizer. They used to have a mountain of raw materials on hand. GM
Looking more for something that would take deliveries. Right now I have a very small layout, just switching at the moment. It may not be the best idea, but I am trying to get maximum variety into it, while keeping a logical purpose to the facilities. The first thing I am modeling is a very basic grain elevator. I was hoping to include with it, as one "industry", something that would receive tank cars. Since it's a farm facility, I figured maybe fertilizer is something that could be delivered. I have an as yet unbuilt Walthers kit, Central Gas & Supply, and I thought I could turn that into something. But I'm not really sure what this looks like in the real world.
SRF, You might do some surfing on the web and see if there are any co-ops in the area, don't know how much farming is done in maryland. from what i have seen in a couple of places in sw mo, they store the fertilizer in a fairly normal looking bins, etc. the small one i am thinking of uses a screw auger that is wheeled around by a tractor and they just stick the end under the covered hopper on the rails, so for that instance there is no real specialized equipment, but someone else may be able to offer more.... Here are some storage tanks for anhydrous ammonia. Anhydrous ammonia is used as a fertilizer all over the US. Its also used by speed feaks to make methamphetamine. Very bad stuff when not handled properly. This image was taken from this web page: http://www.elyenergy.com/index.htm The company seems to sell the stuff needed to make and store various chemicals. eric
