Hey Guys has anyone made a sound car???? Back in my Lionel days I hade a sound car before they had Railsounds 2 it was a very nice car for what I paid. Now I was thinking on using an autorack so I can get the BIGGEST speaker in it. And yes I do run DCC
It can be done. Some of the Belmont Shore guys used a telephone recording chip to put cows in cattle cars.
I made one using a flatcar and a SoundTraxx DSX decoder. I know PSG made on using a boxcar. Used a set of Kato caboose trucks to get track power. Sounds okay, wish it had a bit more base but horn and bell are very nice.
I would like a steam sound car in a boxcar that would chuff with the speed/voltage. But it would have to work on a DC layout. Can those DCC cars work on a DC layout?
Mike, I have a 2nd generation EMD diesel sound car. The decoder and speaker are in an MDC 50' boxcar. Bell and horn sound great. It sounds OK as far as the other sounds but could use a little more bass. I am thinking about trying one in an autorack or one of the sky box cars. Maybe could put a larger speaker ? ? ?
Chris: DCC doesn't work on a DC layout. DC loco's do work on a DCC layout. Stay cool and run steam......
Carl: I put a 5/8" speaker in 50' boxcars with my DSX sound decoders wired to Kato cabooose trucks. Stay cool and run steam......
Chad: I now have three boxcars oufitted with Soundtraxx sound only decoders. This is in addition to the many Soundtraxx decoders that I have hooked up to 4 inch Radio Shack speakers under the benchwork. With four inch Radio Shack speakers you do have the necessary bass that isn't there on a 3/8" speaker. With a 5/8" speaker, you can get a small amount of bass if you properly enclose the speaker. Stay cool and run steam.....
