Here is the old Freight House in Marion Indiana in the 50s. This was in the last days for the freight house, but you can tell by the 5 doors that it had been a busy place at one time. The two pipes at the right of the picture were for the scales to weight cars. When the Crosley automobile, was built in Marion after WWII, they would bring them down to the freight house and load them in box cars.
Nice photo, also a reminder of how crucial railroads were to the economy before regulation and trucks brough them to their knees.
Another piece of history, Roger. Freighthouses saw the transfer of millions of tons of every imaginable item back in the day. It's hard to find one today. I did not know that Crosleys were built in Marion. More history. :tb-biggrin:
Me neither, and I LIVE in Indiana. The Studebakers get mentioned, the importyance of the 500 track for auto testing, but "Crosley" let alone "Made in Marion" is barely a a blurb in Indiana History classes
Interesting, I never knew where Crosley's were made, even though my best friend's father had one right after WW-II. Also, the Crosley engine was preferred inboard power for small racing boats up until the early 50s.
