I have struggled with these running hot but now I really feel I have the answer. The voltage must be kept very low...here is my 3 pole version running at 3.1 volts, barely gets warm. I regard 5 volts as an absolute maximum on this loco (both 3 and 5 pole versions..I have one of each). A tiny dab of Conductalube on the inside face of the wheels is beneficial as well.
