The Discovery Channel ran a segment on GE's new GEVO locomotives in their show "Mega Machines" tonight. It was a re-run, but still worth watching. It basically showed a GEVO being put thru the paces at the test track...

I wonder how long that test track is....and how to get a job testing new locos!LOL!

Apparently, it is not too long, as I kept seeing the same loco in the same spot, but from different angles... I was waiting to see an electric unit too!

I have read that it is three miles long and has multi gauge. The guage was apparent in the video.

My guess is that the second unit was in dynamic and the test unit pulled it along to simulate a load. They would reverse the setup to test dynamic braking. But that is just a guess.

I saw that show. Thought the snow swirling around, made for some neat photography.

    Yes, it was quite nice...

Also, in some of the shots, it looked like they had a GE demo unit in red-white-and blue, but they never focused in on that unit :(

If two units are MU'ed together one can't be in dynamic and the other in load.Pulling a unit in dynamic would seriously screw it up.The reason there were two units together was so they could run short nose lead both directions. It is very difficult to see around the radiator wings on a GE.The test track at GE is 4.1 miles long.

Only if the power cable was connected between the units and the MU hoses were buckled up..........

I think you are refering to the MU cable as the power cable. The air hoses between the engines have nothing to do with power just the air brake set up between the units. You can test the dynamic brake without actually having a train behind the engines. The screen will still show how much dynamic brake is being applied. And the dynamic brake on AC units is a whole lot better than on DC units.Or at least it seems that way.
