Does any one on this board replace there plastic wheels with metal ones? If so, do the cars roll better? Do they track better? Thanks for any input! ------------------ Craig Martyn Best Looking Models Around Custom detailing AND N scale detail parts. BLMA N Scale Detail Parts
I find that I do just the opposite. Metal wheels seem to have deep flanges. I don't want to waste time grinding them down. The nylon type wheels certainly run quieter. There will probably be many opinions on this ------------------ Robin Maberly and Tayside
I have found that metal wheels help some but also sometimes the trucks are warped and this causes about as much trouble as the wheels.
I changed out most of my metal wheels with plastic as they seem to perform better. I also found the older Atlas metal wheels were to shiny and don't look prototypical ------------------ Paul Cassar-# Member number 50 ICQ 61198217 http://users.bigpond.net.au/railroad2000
For those of you who did change them, who's metal wheels did you use? Thanks ------------------ Craig Martyn Best Looking Models Around Custom detailing AND N scale detail parts. BLMA N Scale Detail Parts
I've heard great things a bout CC's metel wheels, my superliner set came with them and I think they work good. Kevin
I just put MTL trucks/wheels on everything. I have on occasion, replaced some nice metal wheelsets when the trucks were replaced with M/T to get the M/T couplers. They run superbly, so I am not too bothered whether they are metal or plastic ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
I change all my trucks to MICRO-TRAINS trucks as soon as I can. Metal wheelsets are changed out if a suitable replacement truck cannot be found. The plastic used in making MICRO-TRAINS trucks(delrin?) is very slippery and the rolling properties of a all plastic truck are 100% better than any plastic framed truck that has metal wheelsets. Try this, put two pieces of flex-track on a box so they are both raised up at one end. Put a metal wheeled truck on one track and let it go. Then do the same for a MICRO-TRAINS truck. You will see the MICRO-TRAINS truck roll a lot farther. If you have to have wheelsets that use the deep flange, and drag of the metal wheels to keep tracking good, you need to make sure all your trackwork is smooth and well built. ------------------ Let's Go Run Trains MARK
Thanks for the input guys! I should point out that I DO have MT trucks and couplers on ALL of my equipment. I was wondering if any one went the extra mile to replace there wheels (which I know are great). Craig,I recently put MT trucks on a new Roundhouse tank car. Roundhouse uses metal wheels on their new releases. On a lark I put the Roundhouse metal wheel sets in the MT trucks.I put the car on our NTRAK layout( 12x42 ft at the time) IO gave the car a hard push and the little bugger rolled all the way around the layout. .It sure impressed some of the HO guys. Would I reccomend this to everybody? No I wouldn't I tried it with an older set of Roundhouse wheels and it didn't roll any better than the junk MT (IMHO) wheels Hey I'm still havin' FUN!! even iof I do have less than a week to build 4 NTRAK modules ------------------ Catt!#118
Buy me a train ticket, furnish room and board and I'll help ya get them done! But I have to disaggree with you about the MT wheels, I think they're the BEST! Especially the low profiles, I can't wait to get my whole fleet changed over! ------------------ BNSF RAILFAN-TO-THE-MAX! Brent Tidaback, Member #234 and a N-Scaler to boot!
