I just got back a couple days ago from our vacation to Texas. We drove from Michigan, down through Illinois through the MidWest. I model a ficticious town lost in the MidWest that the Rock Island runs through. I have been wanting to get some rock face, formations, and vegitation ideas because I am soon to start some landscaping on my layout. This was the prime oportunity to get some ideas. I really love the rock color through the MidWest because it is high in iron, red, blacks, and a large variation of color and texture. Here are some pictures I took along the way I thought I would share. This is what I will be going for, for my rock faces.
Nice photos, particularly the first one. This is the kind of attention to detail that really makes model railroad layouts stand out. When you're modeling the local rock formations and getting the dirt color right you've really hit it.
