a tranz rail bulk milktrain derailed this morning just north of wanganui . 10 wagons derailed , one been split open , spilling 50 000 litres of milk . it may be 3 days before the line is open again , forcing tr to send the milk trains on a circular route , adding at least 400 k.m to the trip . obviously time is vital for this cargo , although the tankds are insulated and the milk is ok for at least 12 hours .
gee thats brings back some unpleasant memories. Approx 13 years ago I was working at a place where a milk wagon derailed and split open spilling all the milk. Oh, yeah, south junction Chullora and it was over 13 years back. 2(?) cars derailed spilling quite a lot of milk onto clay and demolishing a signal location. As you could imagine it tooka while for the milk to soak in and took even longer for it to leach back out. Rebuilding the location (up on a rise well out of the way) was a joy on some days. these days in nz the enviromental agencies are there straight away , and they made dams to contain the milk and stop it going into the river . the local fire engine was adapted to pump the milk out of the remaining tanks into road tankers . what they'll do with the spilt milk i dont know , but i would say the local pigs will get a good feed . where were they transporting milk in australia , and are they still doing so ? david
David, all milk in NSW travels by road now. Rail service to Sydney ceased about 4 -5 years back. As for other states, I don't know.
