International Paper has announced the mill at Corinth (Palmer Falls) will close between October and the end of the year. This is the last active customer on the Adirondack Branch. Only use for a tourist train remains as a salvation for the line.
Just curious- As I am not familiar with this location, does this mean that the location of "Corinth" is actually within a town named Palmer Falls? Thanks- BoxcabE50
Actually it's the other way around. Palmer Falls is in the town of Corinth. The Palmer Falls Branch leaves the Adirondack Branch at Corinth station and runs almost 2 miles to Palmer Falls, which the mill is adjacent to. The trackage within the mill is like a model railroad with switch-backs and extremely steep grades. More than one engineer has lost control and run off the end of the tracks, most of which are on the edge of the Hudson River. Operations require patience and generous use of the air brakes, quite a treat in snow or rain.
Big Al, someone asked on another forum who once owned the abandoned tracks at Ausable Forks? I know the New York Central didn't go there, was it the D&H?? Thanks.
Yep, D&H Ausable Branch connected with the mainline near Plattsburgh. A small segment still exists just north/east of the I 87 bridge to serve a propane gas dealer.
Thanks Al. Wish we could go back to the days when all those branches were active and steam was running on them!
