I thought this would be a fun topic for the group, so here goes. We all know that train modeling is one of the most enjoyable hobbies invented since cavemen begin playing with sticks. There is so many different avenues in it, that there's always something new to get into. It can be scenery, or laying track, or working with locos and rolling stock. We all have our favorite things to do. The question for the group is this..... What is the most mind numbing, boring, god-awful, this is a total waste of time, why am I doing this, O please train gods strike me dead, part of train modeling is there that you do?????? For me it's cutting out openings for my windows for my scratch-built industries and buildings. In fact I was doing that until.......... I got bored and decided to sign on to check the boards, just to get away from it. Well it's time to go back to the openings, knowing that someday I will be done with them and a new building will grow up and live on the layout. I look forward to hearing from everyone. fotobob my rail images
Hmmm. In N scale, that is surely right up near the top..... Ugh. The buildup of crud possible on MT freight car wheels..... For me, it's the multi-jig process of making Milwaukee Road N scale trolley poles, Then painting them in the three different colors necessary. Eats up a lot of time. And quite a few are needed! Tiny stainless steel kick pannel decals under all the doors on F units. Doing an A-B-B-A set gets old real quick.
Building kits. I had 4 DPM buildings on my layout without roofs for at least three years, till one day I finally got a sheet of styrene, painted it black, and cut roofs. Took, oh, 2 hours tops?
I got a great deal on Intermountain N scale reefers and boxcars years ago. You want to know MIND NUMBING??? Try cutting those tiny parts off of those impossible sprues for 75 cars!!!! I still hyperventilate when I think of it!
Wow, you hung in there way longer than I could. I only did 25 and decided to buy pre-assembled ones after that.
Decaling N scale loco numberboards. May not be mindnumbing boring but it sure is a pain and something I hate to do. The results are so fantastic though.
Wow, you hung in there way longer than I could... </font>[/QUOTE]I could only do about 10-15 at a time, then I had to go soothe my nerves with pizza and beer.
Assembling MT couplers especially the Z scale # 903's. Boredom or frustration?? Stay cool and run steam.......
Same here, I put off clearing off my work bench way too long. I must have 6 unfinshed projects beginning to get mized together, which mean s the fun part is sorting them out, putting them away, etc., though #2 is doing DPM buildings and all they entail, which isn't much, but for some reason I put them off almost as bad as the work bench.
For me its ballasting. The results are worth the work, but its tedious, somewhat messy, and shuts down the pike for 24 hours while the ballast cement dries. And it never fails that after I'm done I find some flaw in the track that I want to correct, so up comes the ballast so I can put it back down again.
Boring: Painting the rails, (after I get good at it) Tedious - The sodering practice I've been doing Most Fun: Designing
Waiting for scenery glue or paint to dry. I don’t often have a lot of time to devote to the layout, but when I do I get on a roll and I don’t like to have to stop to wait for stuff to dry.. Figuring out how to make these mew Crapmann Uh I mean Bachmann Amfleets roll better . Installing MT couplers on the Amfleets…
I think for me the biggest mind numbing job is masking. I remember masking the windows for the old Bachmann Amfleet cars so I could paint the windowsills black like they were supposed to be. It seemed like I was taping for days!
