I'm currently planning my spring work in the garden which includes an extension on the O scale layout there. I was wondering, what does everyone else work to for a minimum radius on curves ?

As a general rule of thumb a minium radius of 72 inches is best for operation and looks. Bigger is better and no less than 64 inch radius for tight curves. Alot depends on what you are running, That 72 inches will work for a Big Boy and passenger cars but will look alot better with larger radius. Hope that help's you out.

wow 72" radius, a full 12' for a 180 degree turn, thats about the width of my garden.

Since my only loco is a NW2, think I'll get away with doing it in 9-10' ?

You could get away with 36" radius and have it look generous with the NW2. :D

Yes. With 9-10 feet, it will still look very decent, when using an NW2.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've been out measuring the garden today, looks like I will have to change my plans, and convert one of my sidings into the return loop. Won't be as exciting as I planned, but will fit the space, much more useful! ;)
