What model would get me closest to this? Fallen Flags photo: Is Atlas' standard cupola caboose close, with removal of window dividers & widening the cupola side windows? Is this best for a kitbash, using laminated custom sides? Atlas paints the generic caboose in D&RGW schemes, but the caboose is not correct enough for me. Ideas?
Jeremiah The Atlas orrrr the Life-Like will get you there. No matter which is chosen extensive window bashing will be needed. The Walthers bay window has curved window frames. I've never cut those out and it could be difficult. The best plan may be to fill all the windows with Evergreen Plastic, sand it and start over. I do that on all my WP baywindows. I'm sure you can make it work. Consider couplers. The LL has a coupler box and the Atlas will take the screw in body mount.
Pray59, this may be another laser side project for you..... Is the cupola too far backward to use an Atlas sans modification?
In MR a couple of years back, someone, Mike Denneman?) did a Grande caboose article for Nscale. He used the Atlas caboose, and put .010 styrene over the sides so he could cut the windows that he needed. Then there was the fellow who did the BN cab with decaled sides in N...perhaps you could do that! It's a fun project. Because no one make a Grande caboose in any scale unless you go brass Good luck on the bash, and let's see the progress!!
J- If you can get an almost-dead-straight-on photo, you can derive dimensions from that. I do it all the time for ships and bridges, and often come out under .01 percent in accuracy.
Check with the Rio Grande Modeling & Historical Socity. One of the issues of the Prospector had drwings of the 01400 series cabeese. They might have the back issue to sell to you. http://www.drgw.org [ 10. November 2004, 02:59: Message edited by: Paul Liddiard ]

If Paul and/or Charlie will allow a quick commercial: As mentioned, I am a member of the Rio Grande Modeling and Historical Society. The Prospector magazine is the official magazine of the RGMHS. Also published on an "as needed" basis, is the Green Light, the Society newsletter. Membership is $30/year. Includes 4 magazines, folio sheets, supplemental information to selected articles etc......and member discounts on things such as the Data Source CD's. CD's are $25 regular, $15 member Folio sheets etc......Included with MEMBER issue of Prospector, but NOT available with magazines purchased from hobby shop etc... If anyone has a Rio Grande project they've done, with photos, write an article on it and submit to the Prospector editor. As a persoanl plug - I did something similar, in that I wrote a review of the Intermountain Railway Rio Gre doing another Grande Tunnel Motors!! Of which can be seen on pgs 18/19 of Prospector V3, N3. May be doing another review, this time on the Atlas O Rio Grande GP60's. Denver, Co area, you can come by the Society tables during Spring/Fall GATS, and the Spring/Fall Mile High RailFair at Jefferson County fairgrounds, or any other large train show. Or, as I'll be doing o for the 3rd year, watching a table at the BMRC train show coming up in 2 weeks. Anyway........More than enough. Just after 3:30AM. Gonna call it quits. Any one want more information, contact me privately and I'll be glad to provide whatever information I can.
