Hi New York Central fans. I recently obtained a photo of Mohawk 2933 on display at the transportation museum in St. Louis, and it's on my web site. I am now searching for a recent, color photo of Mohawk 3001 in Elkhart, IN, for use on the site. For those of you who have forgotten what a Mohawk looks like, here is a photo of 3001 taken many years ago by Bob Schell, from the collection of Robert Spaugh. :D [IMG]

"Ask and you shall receive." Especially on this board. Look what Ron Morse, Hudsonut1, sent me in response to the request. It is now resident, with Ron's permission, on my home site. Thanks, Ron. [IMG] [IMG]

    Beautiful!

Looks to me like an unshrouded J3a Hudson. Were they similar in dimensions in any way?

Alexander, welcome to Trainboard. Yes, the Mohawks were very similar to Hudsons. The vertical height had to be the same due to tunnel clearances, etc. The Mohawk boiler was a little longer, being an eight-coupled engine vs. six for the Hudson. From the front, head-on, the only way you could tell the difference was by the numbers. Earlier Mohawks had footboards rather than pilots, but the L-3 and L-4 had pilots like the Hudsons. :D

Any chance that 3001 will ever see steam again?

(This southern descendent is ignoring Watash's Confederate joke for the sake of sanity.)

You will get used to Watash's humor. After all, he is our answer man. If you are a modeler you will soon find out his infinite wisdom. :D
Re the 3001--Years ago the intent was to restore her to operation. Lately, there is little to no comment from the group at Elkhart. I believe there is no money and recently no interest. I for one was all hyped about restoring her, threatened to move back there and help. After my letters went unanswered my enthusiasm died down. Never lose hope, though. :(

You have really gotta love the NYC to be willing to move from Oregon to Indiana! lol

Yeah the costs of insurance alone makes restoration pretty expensive these days, especially when other groups like 1522 are shelving their steamers :(

From what I heard ,now this is 2nd-3rd hand, one of the big problems with 3001 is that some one tried to take out stay bolts with a torch instead of a chisel/hammer and warped the firebox sides.
That in addition to the other "normal" expenses of reworking a large steamer, more or less has doomed her...however when Fitz and I win the lotto we will rebuild her...right Fitz?

You bet, Ron, and will buy a railroad to run her on, too. Have you seen the ad in Railfan about a 40 mile segment of the old D&H in upstate NY looking for a train to run on their tracks? What a dream for someone who is restoring an engine. :D [IMG]

How 'bout starting with a motorcar and two trailers, and work up from there ... :D

Seriously though, if someone could get a couple of serviceable RDCs .... what about the ones being idled up in northwest Canada ... or was it in Ontario?? Start small and build the market.

Maybe a D&H question, but which issue of Railfan has that ad for an operator of a former D&H branch? I gotta see that one.

Hi Big Al, glad to hear from you again. How are things in Saratoga Springs? Are they still running harness races there?
The Ad is in the November issue of Railfan and Railroad Magazine, page 22, lower LH part of the page. I am not familiar with that part of the D&H, Warren County, from North Creek station in Johnsburg, south to Corinth. Come to think of it, that's north of you almost directly. They don't have a website listed, but have a phone no. (518) 761-6538, for info on the RFP (Request for Proposal?) [IMG]

That is one beautiful locomotive. I started out as a Pacific fan (note the 462 in my name)
and now I love the Hudsons which have displaced the Pacifics in my heart. But that Mohawk is certainly a handsome engine.
